Gueros is the tourist trap mecca of "meh"

You must've gone way off reservation, Ench Y mas is usually pretty solid

Glorias is dumb down Tex mex for left coasters, very "meh"

Go to Habanero off Oltorf, thats good shite

Went to Chuy's the other day, fricking terrible...how is that place still packed?
Stopped in at Flores out in Dripping the other day, pretty good, better than I expected

best litmus test for a Tex-mex place: order a relleno
biggest roll of the dice: tamales....when they're good, they're great, when they're bad, they're fricking awful

To tell you the truth, I'll take a Delta style hot tamale over a classic Mexican style tamale any day of the week.

Best tamales are homemade not from restaurants. It's almost an even trade but you usually get ripped off a little. Pinche maronitos

I grew up not far from Echiladas Y Mas and went there almost weekly growing up. It's the type of place where you see the same people in there every time.

The food is nothing special but it's quick easy and greasy tex mex. Perfect place for cheese enchiladas, I wouldn't get much else.

I never thought I would ever see Y Mas mentioned on this board.

Agreed, I grew up just down the street from there, too. It was never the best, just tasty, cheap, and quick. But a few years ago it got hugely popular on Yelp and by word of mouth, and then out-of-Towners started going there, thinking they were getting the best.

Damn, I didn't know that. I went away for college in 2010, and moved to New Orleans after so when ever I'm back home its for a few days at a time now and its been a few years since I've been there. I usually just hit Maudie's, Trudy's and el rancho when I'm back to get my fix.

I don't get why it's a food that is so difficult to decently replicate, but it certainly seems to be.

I went to El Tiempo 2 years ago while in Houston and couldn't remember the name no matter how hard I tried. Neither could my 3 buddies that came with me. Thank you to all who said El Tiempo

Don't know about the non Texas ones, but it appears you haven't been to an actual mexican restaurant yet.

I went at 5:30pm on a Wednesday and it was packed. Strange.

I got a cheese enchilada and it was OK but I just dont like American cheese/Velveeta that much, and thats what it tasted like. I would like it much better if it was full of Jack cheese.

That's just old classic tex-mex from the 70's.

El Tiempo and Ninfas in Houston, El Fenix in Dallas, and Matt's El Rancho and El Patio in Austin, Garcia's and Mi Tierra in San Antonio are more along the lines of classic pre-1940s/1950s Tex Mex

Yep. A proper old school style chile cheese enchilada can be a glorious thing.

So true. But it's so hard to find now. 1970's Tex-Mex, Jalisco style Tex-Mex, and New Wave Tex-Mex have all but destroyed the old guard.
