Twin brother just moved to Bozeman this past June. I'll be visiting him soon. Probably wait until later in the ski season. We keep getting pounded in Steamboat so might as well stay here for now.

My wife works remotely and I'm in outside sales- my product is pretty non- existent in that particular part of the country. I would have to reinvent myself and I make to much damn money.

Made my first trip up there this summer. Stayed around Glacier the whole time (first in West then in East). Gorgeous gorgeous place. I loved Polebridge and the area around there, but pretty much loved everything. Good to see you.

Is it not worth visiting in May? Really want to make it up there, but the fall might not be feasible.

To Glacier, in May? The snow is melting so the trails are gonna be wet and muddy if hiking is your thing. I tell everyone that there's not a bad part of year to visit this area, but it can get messy.

Going to the Sun will be closed through the park still, and many of the exhibits and visitor centers will be closed. Shoulder season is in full effect in May.

Went with family last July to Glacier Nat'l Park on Backroads bike tour. Had a blast, although pedaling over Going To The Sun Road was pretty tough. Agree with all previously mentioned; would add that Many Glacier Lakes Hotel is a nice stop. Also, if you have your passport, Waterton, Canada is a very cool town. It's not far north of the border, being in the Canadian portion of Glacier. We stayed in a very cool Hotel ( Prince of Wales Hotel?).

If you stay near Yellowstone, go after labor day. The park is just amazing, but it's a parking lot memorial day - labor day

It would be Memorial Day through the first week of June. Should I still expect snow in the ground? Looking to fly fish, hike, see the park, and possibly raft.

This has been a pretty big winter so I would be absolutely shocked to see no snow by mid-June. The ski resort here in Whitefish has reported the most snowfall in nearly 20 years (154" so far). Glacier has much higher mountains than the ski resort so they have even more snow, which doesn't bode well for us anticipating the summer season. Rats!

Rafting doesn't begin til mid-June for most outfitters. Opening day for my favorite, Glacier Guides, is June 15.

Fishing will be good.

Chances are Going to the Sun Road won't fully open until late June with the amount of snow we've received.

We went to Big Sky last year and it was incredible. Loved every moment of it.

Big horn sheep on the side of the rode on the way up to Big Sky from Bozeman.

We did a tour of Yellowstone with one of those vans with skiis on it.

Clark, if you live anywhere in Louisiana, just look out the window. This is May in Montana. Snowing, sleeting or 40 and raining. Take your pick.

I'm glad you enjoyed Big Sky. It's awesome. Just do us all a favor and don't tell anyone else.

Head over to Missoula and find yourself a nice Injun gal. Just stay away from the card rooms. They can be fairly dangerous.

You really really shouldn't go in May if that's what you want to do. I don't really know Montana but I know Yellowstone and Jackson Hole, and May is very very iffy for all those things.

This is a big year for snow so as said it will be June before the rivers have dropped down and most the snow has melted. All the rivers are snow fed obviously so if its melting still they are very high. Many won't fish or raft them when they are high and muddy.

Got any good recs on nightlife, good dinner spots, or any other local insider tips?

I'll bump thread...

Heading to Whitefish March 1. Wife and I got married March 2 four years ago, delayed honeymoon to Montana until that June-July. Said we'd love to go back one year on our actual anniversary for a winter trip, so now it's booked.

We're not big skiers, but want to go on showshoe hikes and x-country ski trails, as well as snowmobiles. I've put together a tentative itinerary with all of those things. Any tips/advice? Oh and apparently there's Bigfork Brewfest Saturday March 4, which sounds awesome. Also, I assume I pretty much have to rent a car to get around? Not exactly thrilled about driving on snowy roads, but I guess that comes with a winter vacation, unless there's an alternative...

Is it even possible to visit GNP in Winter? Better question may be is it worth trying Jan-March?

I went to Montana last May and stayed halfway between Livingstone and Yellowstone for 3 days. It was still cold then. Driving Beartooth Highway was on the list of things to do, but the road was still closed. However the drive through Paradise Valley to Yellowstone was absolutely gorgeous. Currently I'm planning a trip to Glacier in August. I can't wait to drive the Beartooth Highway.
