Two American literature classics found across thousands of library shelves in the U.S. have been shelved, potentially for good, in one Virginia school system.

The Accomack County Public Schools removed “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” after a parent filed a complaint for the books’ use of racial slurs, according to multiple media outlets.

Earlier this month, a parent voiced concerns to the school board about racial slurs in both of the novels.

“Right now, we are a nation divided as it is,” the mother is heard saying in an audio recording of the meeting on Nov. 15. She tells the board that her biracial son, a high school student, struggled getting through a page that was riddled with a racial slur.

“So what are we teaching our children? We’re validating that these words are acceptable, and they are not acceptable by any means,” the parent said.

Victoria Coombs, a mother of two, told 10 On Your Side she agrees that books with offensive racial slurs should not be read in schools.

“It’s not right to put that in a book, let alone read that to a child,” she said.

Oh good, I've always wanted to censor history and live as though bad things never happened.

I don't think it was the snowflakes that made this decision.

Has anyone e-mailed Mark Twain to get a response? I mean, it's 2016 - what was he thinking?!

Well apparently we are teaching them that if there is something that makes you the least bit uncomfortable or experience even a tinge of offense, then you are entitled to have authorities wipe it from your existence and pretend like it doesn't exist. This will no doubt prepare the next generation for the real world.

So she doesn't understand the allegory of two American Classics and finds verbiage common of the time to be her scapegoat. Maybe her children can read See Spot Run and discuss the struggle of Spot as he ran, while other students opt to actually learn something about American literature.

We should ban history from being taught in schools because of racism of the past.

You know how I know she's never actually read To Kill a Mockingbird? Because if she had, she'd realize it was FAR ahead of it's time in terms of showing racial hatred and the persecution of an innocent black man. For frick's sake...Atticus Finch ought to be a damn civil rights hero.

If you read that book and come away upset that the word nagger was used and you don't grasp the actual message of the book, then you're an idiot...which is what any reasonable educator should have politely told this lady.

Instead of explaining to their children the meaning and hate some words can carry and doing some actual parenting, lets just ban the books.

Lazy dipshit parents.

She probably lets her son listen to rap music that uses the N-word non-stop, but yes, lets stop him from reading.

They are not banned, and they probably won't be. They are being reviewed because that is the protocol when a parent files an official complaint. It's a misleading click bait title and article.

But yeah, this mother is stupid as frick and completely misconstrues the message and intent of those novels. Those are probably the two most important anti-racist works in all of American literature and maybe culture as a whole. That's less important than her attention grab though.

My son is named after a character in Huckleberry Finn(I own a 1st edition. One of my favorite books and authors)

Will be ironic if the book is no longer in school by the time he is of age
