and a parallel question is "how difficult is it to get an established successful HC to coach in the SEC West"

before you attempt to squelch my first amendment rights I hope you read this and think about it

it is very difficult to get a successful head coach to change jobs. most successful guys are already making millions; fairly close to the the 5 million or so we would pay. if said coach is happy and likes where he is and makes close money (esp. if he can use us as leverage to get more by staying) a smart guy isn't going to accept the risk of coming to LSU right now and having to compete in the brutal SEC west, esp against Saban. LSU has high expectations of success.

I think we didn't just lose Fisher and Herman, but Fedora as well. Fedora and his family are very happy in Chappel Hill and I can see why. he turned down Tennessee not long ago. in today's Dandy Don interview with mike Detillier he iterated that coaches from "other regions" did not show great interest in the job.

for some that view this LSU HC job in a vacuum, their are some very good jobs at other schools. my point is that LSU was going to have to hire a guy not yet proven at the top level (a present coordinator or small school HC) until coach O came in and, facing the most brutal 7 game schedule in the country, had success. and he won over a lot of fans and big boosters in the process. one can view this either as a good thing or a bad thing (and that is certainly being done).

HC coaching searches really are about timing and luck; not just at LSU. our timing was just not conducive to hiring a big name guy. hell, we offered Fisher to be the top paid coach in the country and it didn't work.

sure, coaches are extremely competitive people and want to play the best, but not at the expense of their careers. I just hope coach O works out; his story would be a great one and he's a guy that people pull for (underdog, etc). if not, we'll be out there looking again.

We did not offer Jimbo to be the highest paid. Harbaugh makes 9 million.

Would you want to work for Joe Alleva? Neither would anyone.

I think the better question is what went right?

What have we learned from this?

Our program is not a top 5 program.

Coaches see how we treat other coaches and support the team. They see the empty stadium after halftime.

Nobody is going to come coach at this school with this level of support right now. This program needs a few Curley Hallman years to weed out the sidewalk fans

I'll what what went wrong. Putting all your eggs in one basket for one or two coaches is not going to work especially when one of them is firmly established in a storied program and is doing well. The other is an up and coming HC that other schools were eyeing. We should have have looked not just at 2 but across the country for an HC with the right fit.

You "assume" there was a search beyond Jimbo, Herman and O.

There is zero evidence to support such a claim.

I have no problem with Coach O, but clearly of the 3 he was the third option.

IMO it falls like this as far as raking the coaches.

1 Jimbo
2 Herman
3 O

How much of a difference there is between 1 and 3 remains to be seen and we may never have a full gauge because only 1 guy can coach LSU.

Who knows how or why Jimbo and Herman didn't end up with the job but I thing it suffice to say that if O was your guy all along the hiring would have happened before now.

I get your overall point and dont necessarily disagree, but this is not accurate.

Wins include:
Arkansas who lost to Mizzou
Texas A&M
Southern Miss
5-7 Ole Miss
Mizzou

He lost to the only two teams that were any good (even though Florida is trash) Les Miles style

Saban, Urban & Harbaugh....Can't wait to see if Tom Herman joins that elite group.

Dabo, Stoops, Jimbo, possibly Peterson and maybe a couple of others form the next group.

Where are all the great proven head coaches? There's only about 10, and most are untouchable.

O's deal is setup so that he can easily be replaced if he doesn't work out. LSU is in great shape.

Joe Alleva is the correct answer. He has obviously built a very bad reputation for himself and LSU. He has mishandled everything he has touched in terms of coaching hires and management.

We all need to get behind Coach O and pray he is successful, despite our horrible administration.

Alleva did not have a plan beyond Fisher and Herman. Kinda sad that we had a 2 month head start on everyone else and all we came up with on our search list were 2 head coaches, 1 of which already turned us down last year.

but Fedora as well.
Every UNC site I looked at the past few months said Fedora was gone if LSU would have offered.

I just think LSU didn't want to take the hit in recruiting unless they were getting the top dog.

Retain O dirt cheap with no buyout, keep the recruiting pipelines going. If he does well, great. If he doesn't, we move on, but the team is still loaded.

It's not the way I would have gone, but I think this had to factor in their minds.
