Wouldn't an eight team playoff just shift the controversy down a few rankings?

The bickering and lobbying and controversy will shift from the 4th, 5th, 6th ranked teams to the 8th, 9th and 10th ranked teams.

Yes but you'd get more college football games

Well in my 8 team playoff the conference winner would get an automatic bid so that gets rid of the conference champ controversy and yea there would be controversy over the at-large bids but this system would have less controversy than the current.

People lose their minds talking about who got snubbed in a 68 team field in March Madness. There's always bickering.

Yes, which is why there is no reason for it.
The goal of a season is to find the two best teams to play each other.
If you are the 8th ranked team, you have no business competing for the #1 spot.
I like it how it is. #1, #2, and #3 usually have a case to be ranked #1 or #2. #4 gets in because they need an even number of teams, and some years even they may have a case for being ranked #1 or #2.
Everybody else can frick off.

Yes and it would create more odd scenarios. Like the looser of the Big 10 championship game would get knocked out the top 8, but Michigan and Ohio State would still get in. Two teams that didn't make it to the championship game.

People always argue this. However, if you're a two-loss team arguing to get that 7th or 8th spot, you have much less of a gripe than an undefeated or 1-loss conference champion who gets left out.
More importantly, imo, an 8 team playoff gives an occasional non-Power 5 team a chance to compete. It would be fun to let a team like Western Michigan have a shot at a playoff win.

Yes. Of course. Look at NCAA men's basketball. You have teams going 20-13 with losing conference records bitching about the "horrible injustices" of being team #69 or #70 and getting left out of March Madness.
The bitching will just work it's way down. Keep four teams in the CFB playoff.

8 teams would be awesome this year. It'd be pretty fun to watch the BIG potentially get exposed.

Of course there would still be arguments about who should get in for any type of playoff. Having an 8 team playoff means more games. Also once you get below the 8th best team those teams have much less of a shot of winning it all so it doesn't matter as much if they get left out. Most years there is a couple of elite teams and then another bunch a step below. It makes it less likely for the elite team to win every year too

yeah but the farther you go, the less of a real arguement a team has
If you can't win your conference or be in the top 8 then quite bitching
as is we have 4 spots for 5 major conferences, and drastic inconsistencies among the sized and structures of those conference.

Sure, but we all know an 8 team would be way better. I just wish they would've let the BCS rankings determine the 4 or 8 teams, not a stupid committee.

Yes, but it would also eliminate the conference champion conundrum that we've seen. The CFP brought this on themselves when they vaulted Ohio State to #4 in 2014. You're never going to get a traditional, all-encompassing playoff system, but leaving out conference winners over at-large teams from the same conference is an issue in the long run.
You've got to balance the value of the regular season as well, but a guarantee that all P-5 champs get in would keep up the intrigue IMO. P-5 champs, highest ranked non-P-5 champ (assuming they're in the Top 16, or a similar level), and 2 at-large bids.

It would put an end to the conference champions requirement/non-requirement and which conference to leave out
5 conference champs + 3 at large leaves a lot less controversy

Yes and no. Either way, I'll always be against an 8 team playoff as they'll never agree to higher seed home games for the first round. It screws the fans and will create a corporate atmosphere for the playoffs.

A 4 team playoff is a joke. What kind of a shitty tournament only has 4 teams?
Posted on 11/28/16 at 2:40 pm to HailHailtoMichigan!
If you've played 12 regular season games plus potentially a 13th with championship weekend and you're still only ranked 8th, you don't' deserve a shot at a national title.

College Football has the best regular season in all of sports. Want to ruin it?...then expand the playoff. We're always going to complain about who gets left out but at the end of the day, it will be tough to say that the winner of the two playoff games isn't worthy of the championship.
College Football has 115 teams that have very different schedules. We're never going to have a perfect, flawless way to select a champion. Adding more games dilutes the product and makes a loss much less impactful. Let's not kill the golden goose in this quest for "fairness."

Since we're never getting rid of a playoff, I'd be ok with an 8 team playoff in which the 5 Power conference winners gets auto bids, the top ranked Group of 5 team gets an auto-bid provided that ranking is within the top 15, and no conference can have more than two participants in the playoff.
Depending how next week goes, I'd assume the hypothetical 8 team playoff this year would include:
1. Bama
2. Clemson
3. Washington
4. Penn State
5. Oklahoma
6. Ohio State
7. Western Michigan
8. West Virginia/USC/Colorado
The debate for the 8th spot would be intense. The other 7 would be clear IMO.
