Would a compact saw work or would a standard sized saw be better? How much of a bitch are they to clean afterwards?

We use a saws-all and have a traditional meat saw for backup. Ours is the standard size. We can do several deer with no worries on battery life. We clean it with the hose between deer and use soap/brush after each weekend.

A compact may work just as well, never tried one.

All the time. Use it to cut the hooves off, head off, split the hips, etc

My husband will cut up anything with a sawzall. I expect him to conquer the whole world with that thing.

I killed one in Missouri ten or so years ago at dark when the temp was 2 degrees. The guide put it on the skinning rack and said he would clean it the next morning. I watched him cut the back straps out with a sawzall the next morning in -1 degree weather with a 20 mph wind.

It was the damnest thing I'd seen in my life up to that point.

No. All I use is a skinning knife, there is no need to go all Texas Chain Saw massacre on a little old whitetail.

a sawzall seems highly unnecessary for cleaning a deer

We switched to some big limb cutters instead of the sawzall. Faster and easier to clean up.

Yep, hunted a club where a portion of the meat killed on every other one went to the camp kitty. Had to split it down the back bone, hell of a lot better than a meat saw.

I don't drop the guts if I don't have to but if I have a walk in cooler at my disposal I'd much rather use a sawsall to split the sternum.

It's better to learn how to dejoint the deer rather than worrying with a saw. The knife is actually faster and less cleanup.
When guest at our camp pull out the saw to cut on a deer, all the old men roll their eyes and walk off, lol.

We have one at the camp and some people use it. It works extremely well.

It's like a challenge to me to quarter my deer up with only my pocket knife so I never use the sawsall. It's a pain in the arse to clean after.
