I decided to go from private practice to a faculty position at a medical school.
I am amazed at the conversations with academic physicians about the election. Many of my colleagues voted for HRC.
I now refer the the place as "The People's Republic of __ University."
When I was in private practice or in the military, I did not know many docs who voted democrat.

All of our docs voted for HRC....probably over medi-cal. Who knows how Trumps presidency will change that.

An an orthopaedic surgeon, in my unscientific survey, one out of the about 40 surgeons on staff voted for HRC- and it was a guy whose parents are from china but he was born and raised in US
Every AA surgeon said they voted for trump. They were so vehement in their criticisms of HRC that I believe them when they stated they voted for trump

Liberals abound at these places. I was shocked as well.

Posted prior. Your answer is in here (the sheltered world of academia)
Skin in the game (or lack thereof). Dreamworld of the proud..
My 2cents (as I take out my very broad brush):
1st concept is success does not equal wealth in some instances. If we are linking successs to wealth:
The "successful" people fall into these categories:
- the ultra wealthy
- the "working" sheltered world wealthy
- the "working" real world wealthy
The ultra wealthy consist of the Uber rich east /west coast billionaires and Hollywood types. They live in a very artificial controlled environment which is often times out of touch with the real world that they scoff at. The have very limited direct skin in the game and are immune to most of the consequence imposed on the lesser folks. They are very well intentioned and have no problem feeling confident in their ability to fix everyone's problems (due to their anecdotal experiences). As a group, they lean left...
The working / sheltered world wealthy consist of politicians, academicians, lawyers (whole 'nother discussion) types. They too live in a very artificially controlled environment which is often times out of touch with the real world they are insulated from. They have very limited skin in the game and are immune to most of the consequence imposed on the lesser folks (quite honestly they rarely interact with lesser folk, mainly just one another). They too are very well intentioned and have no problem feeling confident in their ability to fix everyone's problems (as long as it does not impact them significantly). As a group, they lean left..
The working / real world wealthy consist of the STEM graduates, physicians, engineers, small businesses owners types. They live in the real world governed by market forces and constructs imposed on them (in part by the 2 former groups). They interact with all aspects of the public (good and bad). The have skin in the game. They see day in and day out the true human condition and realize there are no easy fixes / policies to cure all of humanities problems. As a group, they lean right.
