I agree that being a warmonger is undesirable, but god damn the Romans were up my arse from turn 1 and I've also got Germany and Greece (Pericles) on the continent so any move at all on city states is viewed negatively.

Rome and Greece are rough neighbors. I haven't had a game yet where they didn't both declare on me within ~40 turns. China annihilated me on a new game last night. They had a full military by turn 40 and destroyed my arse for having a wonder. I didn't stand a chance

It's a bit steep for all of us. Been playing since Civ 3 and this one is so very different. In a good way.

Wonders significantly handicap you early game now, the ~15 turns it takes to construct represent a lot of opportunity cost in regards to military production which the AI overwhelmingly favors.

The only ones I've constructed are Hanging Gardens and Stonehenge. Stonehenge and Oracle seem to be the best Ancient/Classical era Wonders

I feel like I'm starting too slow. Like last play through I had two settlements, two city states I was friendly with, and maybe 5 troop units. I think on turn 50 to 60 Rome declared war on me for not attacking anyone and then sent a Whole damn legion of troops to rape and plunder. So, What's the best way to get started?

Get a ton of archers and spearmen. Focus on protection until you are out of the classical era when there is a huge warmonger penalty for declaring war. The AI knows how many units you have, play but safe with barbarians and don't lose units to them. The promotions are very important.

So far I've found that focusing on early wonders and districts severely handicaps you military-wise, and the AI pounces on you for it. Gotta keep pumping classical era military units. Swordsman (might be too late if you start here) or spearmen

I'm having a much harder time appeasing other civs in this one. Also, the game basically forces you into early game military with how aggressive the other civs are.

Same thing here. The AI is so goddamn aggressive in the early goings. I've found success in deforestation, and building an early war machine with Tomyris.

It's also been hard for me to not get locked in early into an eternal war with barbarians

It does but it has been worth it at times. I've started 5 games now. First 2 were just to feel it out. 3rd was a complete game. The only time it screwed me was the 4th and I TOTALLY shite the bed with regards to military. In the others (especially the 3rd) I have been able to manage it well. I got away with Great Library and Hanging Gardens so far in my 5th but I'm kind of isolated. I did the random map and I'm on a mass kind of like Australia with a 1x3 tile strip of hills connecting me to something else. I haven't explored over there too much but it has me pretty isolated.

Best strategy I've found is holding your ground near your cities and districts but run like hell if you're scouting. If they attack your territory then let them come to you. You're stronger at your city center/district. I build the 6 tiles around me before I go for the ones farther away. When you're scouting, hit them when you can but don't hesitate to run away. They can't heal, you can...same as 5.

Same.

Started a game with Barbarossa, starting to get the feel of it. I have a literal shite ton of military. Cleopatra wants to be friends lol
Ghandi hates me and I have managed to get embroiled in an endless war with barbarians. This game is awesome.

Still not sure wtf I'm doing with the religion and all that jazz, but I'm learning.

Civ 6 is freaking amazing but hard as frick!

Like is it wrong to build a marketplace and boost your gold intake pretty high? I have also spec'd my trade dudes to get more gold as well.

Am I looking at this from the wrong perspective?

This x1000.

In a game as Russia, I built a few wonders and tried to get greedy completing lots of buildings instead of getting a strong military. I was friends with both of my nearby neighbors, Gandhi and Trajan, so I felt like I could cheese it. I had several cities built and since I was Russia had a LOT of territory, so when I met Japan he was NOT happy with me. He instantly declared war, and Rome surprised me with war as well and sent ~20 unit army that wiped me off the map

What are you asking? Commercial districts have the sole purpose of increasing gold income.

Hell yea it is.

Pro Tip: DO NOT go to war against Scythia, especially past Classical Era. Everyone will hate you and she can pump out units faster than you can think. I did this because the map I spawned on cut me off from the rest of the world and I need to capture her capital to get out.

I got my arse whopped and started a new game with Gorgo. I like the Greek bonuses.

I think building wonders goes hand in hand with geography and neighbors. If you do not have aggressive neighbors and geography where city-states can protect you from the AI then go for it. By turn 85 I had constructed pyramids and the oracle. You just have to prioritize.

I'm dominating as Scythia. Horses are much easier to come by as a resource, so you can pump out the 2 for 1 unique unit so fast and rule the classical/ancient eras.

That 2 for 1 is insane. I played as Scythia last night on a small map last night just to see how fast I could rush into the horse archers. Talk about aggro.
