And is Ghostbusters the movie to do it?

This isn't a thread to comment on your opinion of Ghostbuster, just to look at the numbers. I don't see how there can be such a discrepancy in the audience/critic reviews (49% vs 73%) without there being some under the table stuff going on. In looking at some of the reviews, they marked reviews 'fresh' that I would not. Would you want to see a movie that is described like this...

quote:

How will the reboot be remembered a couple of decades down the line? Not as beloved, or beloathed; more likely as beliked, if it's remembered at all.

Yet they marked that as a 'fresh' review. In fact, the average critic score is only 6.5/10.

I could understand if the audience rating is higher because people can generally overlook things that critics don't, but not really the other way around. Are there other movies where there is such a wide discrepancy in ratings?

People have generally liked the movie from what I've seen.

My point all along is I really wouldn't want to watch GB reboot even if they had cast men in those roles.

Just looking at the top movies now The Legend of Tarzan is a critics 36% and audience 69%. By this logic the critics are being paid to hate this movie. Looking at the audience score of a movie is a flawed metric since people on the Internet can rate things without seeing them, particularly this movie.

The new “Ghostbusters,” which stars Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones, is cheerful, disposable and bound to be a hit, since it meets or exceeds current expectations for summer entertainment. The spooky beginning is really funny, and bright gags pop up fairly frequently.

This is the next sentence in the full review. It is usually easier to tell if the review is recommending the film or not. I guess he is giving it a 5/10?

Also, if you click "top critics" instead of "all critics", the percentage drops to 57%.

Around half of the 78,000 audience reviews on rotten tomatoes disagree. I haven't seen the movie, so don't have an opinion, just curious about the discrepancies on rotten tomatoes and whether it's really accurate, or honest with it's scores.

I mentioned that I could definitely see audience reviews being higher since they can overlook things, and Tarzan might be a good example with the good visuals and cinematography. My question is not really about the movies paying off critics, but more how rotten tomatoes comes up with their rating, seems pretty flawed and deceiving if a movie is rated 5/6 out of 10, but is 'certified fresh'.

Good point about the audience rating, but I'd think after a certain number of reviews, the rating would level out the biased reviews, and there's over 70,000 reviews out there right now.

Even that is a back handed complement

Certified Fresh is different.

Movies and TV shows are Certified Fresh with a steady Tomatometer of 75% or higher after a set amount of reviews (80 for wide-release movies)

So can "critics".

Better question, who visits rotten tomatoes in the first place?

People are probably making accounts on RT just to downgrade it. It's not that hard to understand. Entitled twats are just upset that it's not as bad as they'd hoped and their manbaby crying isn't validated by reviews.

I do. It's one of my favorite websites, and I'm not ashamed of it one bit.

Exactly, this goes for any user review metrics on the internet. Most recent example that comes to mind is the number of thumbs up/thumbs down on the trailers for the Call of Duty & Battlefield 1 video game. One of them had an overwhelming number of thumbs up and the other had nearly the same amount of thumbs down due to online campaigns to vote up/down.

On Metacritic & Rotten Tomatoes, there's no way to verify if a user has seen the movie/TV show or not. Like Porter Osborne Jr said, I'd like to know what's the average number of user reviews during a movie's opening weekend. I'm willing to bet the number of user reviews is higher for Ghostbusters.

And is Ghostbusters the movie to do it?
Well most critics select the fresh or gotten rating themselves. So the rating is only as good as the critics themselves.

From the FAQ:
quote:

Most critics from the Online Film Critics Society (OFCS) enter their own quotes and ratings. For critics who don't enter in their own quotes and ratings, it's basically up to the judgment of the editors. They take into account word choice, rating (if any), tone, and who the critic is in their determination of whether a review is positive or not.

If an editor is not certain about a review, it is sent to another editor for a second opinion. "Wishy-washy" reviews or reviews where it's difficult to determine if the critic recommends the film are usually given a Rotten rating. We figure if the critic is not confident enough to give the movie even an implied recommendation, then we shouldn't either.

You would be a fool to think that the Ghostbuster scores are not inflated out of fear of repercussions in Hollywood. This isn't Rotten Tomatoes fault, though. They simply aggregate the reviews don't they?
