The problem comes when you do use the brakes. My response will be delayed because I'm used to your hazards.
'THEY'RE BRAKING, maybe not, THEY'RE BRAKING, maybe not, THEY'RE BRAKING, maybe not, THEY'RE BRAKING, maybe not, THEY'RE BRAKING, maybe not, THEY'RE BRAKING, maybe not, THEY'RE BRAKING, THEY'RE BRAKING, THEY'RE BRAKING, THEY'RE BRAKING THEY'RE BRAKING'.
See? Simple.

Driving with hazards may be illegal but what is safer?
A) Driving 70 mph down the interstate in severe wind and rain because you're "that guy" who doesn't understand why people slow down in a tropical fricking storm and has to prove to himself that he's a better driver than everyone else?
or B) Using caution, helping yourself stand out to other drivers out when visibility is low.
The correct answer is neither. Slow down and be cautious without putting your hazards on. It's not difficult.

I've never put my hazard lights on in the rain, but I also can't say that I've ever had a problem when other people do it.

People who drive with their hazards on in the rain are just dumb terrible drivers.

This thread may be the biggest overreaction I have ever seen on TDings. Definition of a pet peeve for some of you.

There should be no issue with any "delay" in your response time because you shouldn't be close enough to the car in front of you, particularly in a heavy downpour, to where it is of any significance.

Exactly. Turn on your lights and slow down. If it is so bad that you can't safely drive then pull to the shoulder, turn on your hazard lights and wait till the weather clears.
That is what was said by a captain of the Louisiana state police in an interview on the radio not long ago when this issue was brought up. They also stated it is illegal and dangerous but the expert drivers here obviously know better.

Isn't this the purpose of headlights which, by law, should be on when raining?

How about that it's just fricking distracting and annoying. I don't want to watch your hazards blink a million times while I'm already trying to concentrate on driving through a downpour.

I mean I know the government says one of those things is illegal but I don't need them to tell me what is safer.
You seem like a douche

I don't care if they pull to the shoulder. Its the people who are still driving pretty fast and I gotta look at it for 20 minutes. frick those people

Its a pet peeve of mine especially when they have flashers on and no lights.
Flashers mean you are in an emergency, you are broken down. It's actually illegal to drive with them on in many states. (but hey so is driving with fog lights on in good weather and that is never enforced)

If I'm not mistaken, there is a difference between an actual fog light and what most vehicles come with, which is called driving lights. I believe you can legally have 4 forward facing lights on at a time, but it's been a while since I researched that.

I would bet that more than half of these "I put flashers on while driving to warn others" are the same people who say "If i am doing the speed limit i can stay in the left lane, slowing traffic makes roads safer"
Posted on 7/15/16 at 9:56 am to Napoleon
Without a doubt.
"My way is the right way. frick being courteous to other drivers."

didn't say a thing about speeding. If the limit is 70 and you're going 50 there is no problem with me going 55. But my question wasn't answered. You guys just assumed I'm the one being an idiot on the road. So again, if you have your hazards on, what light on your car is going to tell me your intention to change lanes? You know, in case you come up on someone doing 40 and you want to do 50.
I've only put my hazards in when I'm going around 40. I don't like driving when I can't see, but sometimes you can't just stop immediately. So I'm warning the people behind me I'm about to slow the frick down when it's actually hard to see people's break lights, even if they are working, when it's day light out side.
I do it so assholes going 75 in a monsoon don't kill me.

this is actually part of the problem. Most new cars have "auto" headlights that come on when the sky darkens and become DRLs at other times. DRLs have no taillights on.
A lot of people drive with headlights and no taillights in the rain. Those people suck.
headlights should be automatically set to turn on when the wipers are turned on. Never got why car companies (other than VOLVO) never did this.
Also all cars should follow the German's lead and have a rear foglight.
