Is My Morning Jacket the best band of the last 20 years?

First album was released in 1999. This excludes bands who started releasing albums prior to '96 (Phish, WSMFP, Radiohead) for the sake of this discussion. I'm watching the Okonoko's performance right now and it gives me chills it is so fricking good

I don't know if I have ever heard of them.
If I were to listen to them, what are their top three songs? Please provide links.

I've really warmed up to MMJ the last 3 years or so. I like the fact that they don't corner themselves as a band and experiment with many different styles.
Jim James voice has an "ethereal" feel to it as well, if that makes sense. Another way of saying it, is when you have a really good feeling/head change going at a show, his voice will sort of carry a vibe up into the atmosphere hovering over the show and crowd. IMO it's an instrument in and of itself (a la Robert Plant).
I Think I'm Going to Hell is an example of a song off that Okonoko's show that represents the power of his vocals.

absolutely not. I do like them but they are overpraised.

I don't really believe such a thing as an "objectively best band" exists, but if I was picking my favorites from 1996-2016 it would probably be Built to Spill, Modest Mouse, The National, Animal Collective or Titus Andronicus.
MMJ is good, but they wouldn't be in my personal top 20 from that period, again not that someone who did would be wrong.

I'm not advocating for one or the other, I'm strictly just trying to throw out some bigger name bands formed post 1996 for comparison:
Fleet Foxes
Arcade Fire
Coldplay
Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals
The Shins
The White Stripes
Ryan Adams & The Cardinals
Dawes
Foals
Band of Horses

MMJ is great, especially live. I like them a lot, but I feel like their studio albums trailed off a lot after Z. That's the only thing that, in my opinion, detracts from their overall greatness. Still a great band though.

Never heard of them. So I'm going to say no.

Best live band of the last 20 years. Their last three albums were really just unremarkable however. Still really like them but they peaked around the time they made Okonokos in my opinion.

They are undoubtedly a top ten band of this century.

They are my favorite band of the last 20 yrs, but I hesitate to say they are the best. I hesitate to say that about any band really, because it's too subjective of a topic.
But yeah, based on my taste, I think they are

I bought The Waterfall on vinyl for 15 bucks brand new at Urban Outfitters the other day. I'm late to it, but that album kicks arse

No, but damnit can they put on a great show. The way Stan from American Dad describes Jim James' voice is perfect.

Probably my favorite contemporary band. "The Waterfall" is a good album, but probably my least favorite of their releases. "It Still Moves" is an absolutely great rock album.
