I've never been, so someone school me on this. Is that little area of water natural or man-made? Has no one ever thought to get alligators out of an area where little kids are in the water? Are they not supposed to be near the water?

I know alligators aren't known to be super predators like they're portrayed to be, but if there's even a chance of them coming into contact with people staying at Disney then I don't see how anyone thought it would be a good idea to have them there.

You do realize alligators are native wildlife to swampy areas LIKE THE STATE OF FLORIDA?

It's a big arse lake that is connected to other waterways.

To keep Gators out they would have to eradicate them.

Disney was built in the middle of the swamp. There are probably over 1 million gators in Florida.

If there is swamp, marsh, water, they will find their way to it.

It is just that simple.

You kill 5 gators and remove them and 5 more will take over that territory.

The gators will come unless you eradicate all wildlife in the area that might be a food source for them. That is not feasible.

They look for gators all the time, but it's Florida. Water ways connected everywhere. How do you think gators end up on golf courses, it's not by choice of the course owners.

I find it hard to believe that a billion-dollar company can't find a way to keep alligators and any other dangerous animals away. Reminds me of the old game Zoo Tycoon where I'd purposely leave cages open so that tigers and shite could get out and eat some of the visitors.

The key to your lack of understanding lies in this single statement.

Better question is why the hell are there small children in areas that are rampant with gators.

You obviously are not familiar with the FL ecosystem.

Disney didn't post the signs in Alligatorese and had them too high up, so they did not know they were not suppose to be in that area.

Why are there rats in New York City? I mean, has no one thought to get them out of all those buildings? Doesn't seem like a good idea to have them there.

Saw this earlier today. Supposedly taken same day as the attack.

quote:

For all that are following the Alligator tragedy in Orlando, here are three pictures of where the child was attacked, the first two are 30 minutes before it happened, the third is from March of this year. Absolutely terrifying.

Also of interest, apparently, unlike other resorts on the lagoon, there weren't any signs at the Grand Floridan saying no swimming.

Disney has comped all rooms at the Grand Floridian Resort. 867 rooms, averaging $560 a night. That's a half million a night.

My heart goes out to the family.

ETA: Pretty sure I see a "NO SWIMMING" sign in the 3rd pic though.

I live about an hour south of Macon, Ga and if there is a body of water of any type, there are going to be gators in it, and we do not have near the population of LA or FL. Cornhuskers don't typically have to worry about gators in a corn field, but they do have some culpability of not being aware of their surroundings, but in my opinion Disney has some blame themselves.
