Awesome photos!

Will be there for a week in July before jumping over to Andros for a week. We're staying a few miles down the coast south of Rock Sound airport.

Any pointers on spots to hit in that area? Did you rent the boat, or did it come with the place you stayed at?

Also -- how spooky were the fish? Really, what I'm asking, how far out did you have to cast. I'm still working on my fly fishing and I'm not overly consistent with a long double haul.

I read so much of this before I went, and after going, this attitude makes me laugh. The people who know how to find fish there will find fish. Those who hammer popular flats over and over again will continue to find spooky fish. If you've really been going there for 20 years, you know it's not "unknown" by any stretch of anyone's imagination. We didn't even go close to Governours to fish for that reason specifically, and we fished the entire 10 days without seeing another fisherman. Frankly, I had planned on deleting the content of my OP after a few days anyway. I just like to fish, take photos, and share them.

I found through this trip (and talking with the Cape Eleuthera guys) that bonefish are really local fish, so there's a reason I didn't name the flats specifically in my post. I don't want to put that info on blast on the Internet. Like I said above, the place isn't unknown by any means, but if you're willing to work, you can get away from the heavily fished flats and find fish. If you want to post your email, I'll shoot you an email with some more specific info about where we stayed and what to look for. I'd just ask that you kept it off the interwebs too.

Good stuff Moon. My next blue water excursion won't be for a while as I have filled up this calendar year with domestic trips. These pics make me miss it incredibly.

Awesome trip. I would like to do something similar one day or at least go somewhere where you aren't forced to have a guide. It's a shame there are no outfits in the tropics that rent boats and have unguided options like the hundreds of fishing lodges in Ontario.

Awesome trip and pics. Glad Yall had a good trip. Also glad to see people realizing the power of the Internet when talking fishing and hunting spots.

You have a legit chance at a grand slam on the southern tip of the Mexican Riviera. There are a couple of guided and at least one unguided options between Xcalak and Mahahual

DIY Fly Fishing on the Mexican Riviera.

quote:

Our DIY package includes the use of kayaks for the week, a cooler to use for your lunches, a selection of 18 custom flies for each angler tied specifically for the Mayan Coast, fishing maps highlighting productive DIY locations, coordination of any guided days guests may desire & a meet and greet upon arrival in Mahahual. As a bonus, your host Nick Denbow, who lives & guides in Mahahual, will be available to offer advice and assistance if needed.

Guests stay at the Nacional Beach Club and Bungalows, run by US expat Evan Mckenzie and his Chilean wife Ana. These tastefully designed beach front rooms are modern and all have a/c, Internet access and safes. There is off street parking, 24 hour security and best of all, bonefish in the front garden!

Breakfast and lunch will be provided by Nacional Beach Club and dinner will be at your choice of one of the top three eateries all within a short walk of the hotel. Mahahual boasts a variety of different restaurants from classic Mexican cuisine to Caribbean Seafood specialities.
