To get anywhere real cool that isn't local I'd easily be looking at 500+ for both flights. That doesn't leave much room for hotels and food and whatever else we might want to do.

I have to be honest, a 3-5 hour distance from BR doesn't leave you with a whole lot to work with, especially in the summer where a lot of outdoor activities are going to be brutally hot. But for whatever reason, you have the Boston logo as your avatar so I'll try and help anyway.
Obvious answers are somewhere in Florida for a beach trip, but that's not very unique.
I know a lot of the area is bad, but Mobile actually has a cool little downtown that you could kill a day or two in.
