It's not that simple. The car can be made to meet emissions standards with software changes, but not without sacrificing reliability and performance.

Didn't click the link, but that's a great offer if I don't have to make changes to my car.

Just visited the VW dealership last week for the 10K service (free). Service manager said that whatever they come up with over and above the "500+500 goodwill package" already given, they cannot force you to have the repair done on your car. He said the older models (13 and back) would face a really costly and time consuming repair, but the newer models would probably just be a computer adjustment. Wife's car gets fantastic mileage and really flies so we don't plan on having the fix done.

I have a 2012 and plan on driving it into the ground. $5k seems pretty fair to me.

Think this will include the Porsche models too? Didn't see a direct reference.

I don't work for VW so I'm speculating.

I would imagine that siginficant hardware changes would be required in the EGR system, fuel system, and exhaust system. Many models without SCR probably actually do need it. Coolers are probably undersized, injectors probably need to be changed, EGR system probably not made to handle the duty cycle, etc etc.

There's a WHOLEEEEEE lot that goes into meeting top tier NOx requirements reliably and safely on a diesel.

After removing the computer cheat, the MPG will be significantly lower.

Not really. It is a massive fail.

I would completely expect this from Russian or Chinese engineers, but not from Germans.

Not going to happen... VW is required to fix all cars to bring them up to code and they will eat the cost.

What if inspection sticker places don't let you? What if they basically black ball these vehicles from the road. Is this 5k going to be enough. Because your car is basically worth 0 dollars at that point. If VW is doing this as punitive damage, it's one thing (and probably too generous). If they are doing this as an across the board solution, many people might get fricked. I don't put it past the government saying it's illegal to drive these cars.

Currently in LA there is no emissions testing for diesels.

EPA will not let the cars stay on the road
Emissions is a fed. regulation.

That is subject to change. If they develop an acceptable fix (acceptable being to the EPA and CARB), you will be required to have it in order to keep driving your car.

Again, I don't work for VW, but I do deal with EPA and CARB. I don't see them allowing these cars to remain on the road. The only options for VW I see here are to figure out how to fix it (and they will likely be forced to warranty that fix) or replace the cars with compliant cars. VW is going to fight it and try to find the out with the least financial impact to them.

Writing a check for $5000 to EVERY SINGLE OWNER indiscriminately and then VW/EPA/CARB washing their hands and acting like it never happened?

In certain parishes there are, and not everyone lives in LA. I get tested. And even if you can get by without the test, who's to say they'll let you register it. I've heard of people owning land Rover defenders and having problems with registration due to the known problems with emission regulations.

Exactly...

Fix will be performed on all vehicles

Only because they got caught. Will definitely be in the market for an unfixed 2013 or older TDI in about a year.

It is a huge, costly failure.
Heads rolled, even of those that had absolutely nothing to do with the deception.

It set the VW brand back many years, just when people were starting to accept them.

No real engineer or corporate leader would ever do such a thing.

The $5 or 6K is much less than a class action settlement. I am sure if you accept the 5K you'll have to waive your right to sue.

We have a leased Q7. I wonder if we will get anything in this deal. Is this proposed settlement supposed to cover depreciation (which they will be eating because its a lease) or more of a "we're sorry for lying" payment.
