I've been considering getting one for some time now. I went ahead and had a bid done just to get a starting point. Not sure if it is way out of bounds on the price but it does seem high. They quoted me $12,500 for a full install for a 16kw generator. I'm still going to shop around but definitely would like to be pointed towards some other reputable businesses.

I use B&D for my electrical service, and they install generators. What size house are you trying to power?

Got a portable generac 17.5 kW, had it swapped over to natural gas and it hooks to a transfer switch. Less than half the price you're looking at.

I have a 20kw, installed 2 years ago, $8300.00 That quote seems insanely high, unless they have gone up that much in 2 years. Used Magic Electric out of Covington/Mandeville.

Building a house right now. Bid for 22kw whole house generator was 5600. 2500 living 2 ac's gas heat, gas range, electric dryer and oven. That seems very very high to me. I realize yours is existing house that takes extra work to tie in but 7k more seems excessive to me.

Holy hell that seems high. You can get the generator on eBay for $4kish. Install can't be that much.

ETA...generac 16k $3600 with box. Guarantee you can get someone to install for $1500 or so.

My dad and Uncle installed a Generac on my Grandma's house a few years ago. I think it only cost about $6k.

But after looking at reviews for the Generac it seems it is not the best brand out there.

Generacs are crap compared to most any other brand out there.

That's way too expensive and 16kW is probably way overkill.

I run my whole 1500sqft house minus the AC on 7kW.

Unless there is a person in the house will serious medical issues I don't see the point. Get a couple of small portable generators and you'll be fine. Realistically, how often does your power go out for an extended period of time ?

I have a 18KW natural gas that runs the entire house including HVAC and it cost $8000.

Less expensive portables are OK, but in times like Gustav having sufficient fuel is critical and it will not run your AC which you really want after an event such as a hurricane.

I believe it is worth it.

My dad had a 22KW Generac installed for $9500 about 18 months ago. Your second quote looks much better.

There are many factors and costs to consider. Don't listen to most people on here. They have no clue. You cannot compare two jobs without knowing the details. Many details are needed to compare one job to the other.

-Generator Size?
-Air or liquid cooled?
-Transfer switch (automatic or manual)?
-Fuel type and source?
-Distance to fuel source?
-Distance of service entrance?
-Distance to distribution panel
-Circuits powered?
-Foundation (Concrete in place, precast slab, plastic pad)?

My recommendation is to save your money. It's a huge expense for something that is mostly a convenience and something that you only REALLY need once every 5 years on average (extended power outage). Don't forget that it also requires maintenance if you want it to work when you really need it.
