re: Would you have gone to fight in Vietnam?

Nope. Two of my great uncles were there and so was my father in law. The stories are so fricked up. One of my great uncles was unstable the rest of his life. He was a drill instructor at Paris Island for awhile but was "reassigned" for being abusive. Vietnam made him fricking crazy.

War is terrible, but young and immature people tend to romanticize it.
William Tecumseh Sherman (even though I hate the son of a bitch) has a great quote on war:
quote:
I am sick and tired of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation. War is hell.

I come from a large military family so glad I didn't have to really make the decision...holiday dinners would have been tough,
^^ This, my father, uncles, and grandfather all served during war time. Being disowned by your dad and grandad for being a draft dodging coward, and not fighting for our country would be worse than death to me.

I am an only son. Wouldn't have been drafted.
You have some mis-information that "only sons" weren't draft-able.

If you were drafted would you have followed orders and dealt with it?

I volunteered, I am sad I did not do another tour. I would volunteer again

No bravado, just couldn't live with myself for dodging.

No, however if that war would have been in defense of our country, then yes I would have went.

Woulda gone and kilt me some vietcong.
Right since you can easily spot them in the jungle.
I don't know what's worse in here. People willing to repeat the same mistake or guys so full of sh*t that are willing to jump into war without knowing what it's about.
Why don't you google Vietnam war casualties on both sides and see you want a piece of it. Dead soldiers, cilvilians, women, children on a daily basis. Guys you know body parts blown up.
If someone invades the US, I'll be one of the first to take arms. But to go to another country and kill people you've never met just because some politicians want you to or so you can wave an American flag on foreign soil is stupid.
And learn your history and be humble. Ever see Americans well receive by viet people in the US and abroad show let you know the war was a mistake.

the war was a mistake because we went about it all wrong. it could have easily been korea part 2 and who knows, maybe south vietnam would have flourished like south korea has

A ton of those soldiers that survived that war came back mentally scarred for life.
This is greatly overexaggerated. The vast, vast majority of guys that came back were fully functional, contributing members of society...far, far better men than the protesting pothead zeros that never went. Don't let Hollywood's Rambo-style movies influence you.

Doubt it.

My dad had no choice. Did his time in the jungles of Vietnam. Only story I ever got out of him about his time there was when he left it.

I would have gone. I'm retired from the military now and truthfully loved it. Even Vietnam wasn't really a just war, had I been drafted I would have had to go. Couldn't look my dad and uncles in the eyes if I had run. My family stays and fights, it what we do....

I used to mow this old lady's yard when I was about 9. She told me her first husband died in WWI, sons and other relatives in WWII and grandsons in Korea and Vietnam. She told me if they call my number do go fight on foreign soil to run. It was odd to hear because in the area I lived it wasn't common sentiment.
I'd have no problem defending this country and the land, but I'm not ever fighting for someone else.

Yeah well hindsight is 20/20 big shot. Wonder what hindsight would say about your gambling addiction?

Considering my current occupation, yes I would've. Call me crazy and/or patriotic, but one should earn the freedom they are being provided if physically and mentally possible
Posted on 3/2/16 at 11:58 pm to RogerTheShrubber
Exactly. When the same politicians who declares war send their sons to go, then ok.
Posted on 3/2/16 at 11:59 pm to TigerFanInSouthland
The question implies what you know now and you making the decision to fight. So it's 20/20.

You're so stupid and full of shite that I don't know where to start, so you win the war of stupid attrition. Job well done.
