If you were drafted would you have followed orders and dealt with it?
Would you instead have dodged the war by going to Canada or taken another escape route?
A ton of those soldiers that survived that war came back mentally scarred for life. I feel badly for those poor souls.

I would've gone. I am not ok with knowing that some other soul had to put their life on the line because I was too chicken to go

Looking back, hell no.

Had I been 18 in 1965 I probably would have felt differently.

I know an old hippie guy who was drafted and went for his induction, etc.

He told "the man" that he wouldn't want to shoot farmers (Vietnamese) because he likes farmers. He said he'd be more likely to shoot officers telling him to shoot farmers.

He got a "psych exemption" or whatever it's called, and said he's never lost a construction job because of it.

He never made a ton of money, but has a nice house on a nice piece of land and has lived a contented life.

My rich political father would have used his influence and connections to get me a spot in the Texas Air National Guard so I wouldn't have to go

I worked with a guy that did two tours. He told me that as soon as they set up a perimeter, they'd fly in steaks and beer.

Easier to say "yes" if you don't have to commit.

Saying no and telling the sh*tyy politicians to fight the war themselves would be the correct answer.

A perfect response that I wish to borrow. The only war I will fight is one to defend my family here on our soil.
