Naw, if the burned out section is only a small fraction of the mainline, they'll probably just patch it and move freight again. If the majority of the archaic trestle is destroyed, then they'll have no choice. That'll be good money for a prestress and a construction firm, they'll want to replace it quickly.

The old Lake Ponchartrain NS trestle had 50' steel firebreaks about every 500'. It was converted to an all concrete bridge from '86-'94.

didn't know amtrak went up the kcs side. .i know they come up the bnsf toward Lafayette but thought they went a different direction going east. ..gonna be some rerouting going on for a little wile. ..

According to some stories online, Amtrack has already instructed its New Orleans-bound train (from Chicago) that those passengers will need to disembark in Jackson, MS and take a bus the rest of the way in due to the fire. I'm sure the freight train company is also aware of the situation.

Greg Champagne (St. Charles Parish Sherrif) posted on Facebook that the fire was started by the workers using heavy grinding equipment. Fire responders are having difficulty reaching the fire due to its location. A helicopter is in route to assist.

There is firebreaks but that thing is so damn old and so remote that who knows if they will work as designed. A typical firebreak I believe is 500 feet apart. My guess is that at least one 500 ft section is shot.
They need to just rip it out and start over. That bridge is a disaster. Way past functional standards.

Took this picture from the Hwy 90 bridge over Bayou des Allemands on the way to Houma. That thing is putting out a ton of smoke.

Looks like this will be a major headache for freight transportation and the folks who depend on it.
