Pretty cool video in story linked.

Popular Mechanics article link

quote:

AM radio towers are giant beasts thanks to the way AM radio works: amplitude modulation. The more power, the higher the band of the radio. This means that they are essentially radiating out broadcasts with lots and lots of energy, as opposed to FM radio. But just how dangerous are those towers? This Michigan State University Amateur Radio Club demo should give you a rough idea.

By attaching a jump cable to the tower, the amateur radio club at the university essentially shorts out the tower briefly. When that happens, the arc of electricity firing off the tower then carries enough strength to actually unleash the audio.

In other words, the sound of the audio, is carried in the electrical arc. Pretty cool.

You could clamp those on 0bama's nutz and let Rush hum the Anthem. That would be cool.

Fine point #1 that the story missed: the arcing tower was not actually connected to anything... it was simply located *next* to a tower that had 50KW pumped into it.

Fine point #2: notice that the tower-guy starts to reach down to disconnect the bottom (grounded) clip first, then thinks better of it. Good thing; that would not have been pretty.

Fine point #3: This was at the tower of 89 WLS. John Records Landecker and company were cool wa-a-ay back in the day.

That is all.
