New Premier League logo for next season

With Barclays no longer being the title sponsor of the EPL, it's just going to be called the "Premier League" next season... so they had to change the logo.
They decapitated the lion and threw him on some colorful backgrounds.

Wow. That's bad. Really bad.

Making a good logo out of that word mark and image would be simple, and yet, it's terrible.

When I first saw it I thought they were trying to decide between one of the four.

I think people are overreacting. It looks fine.

Jesus, was Barclays footing the entire marketing department salaries?

I kind of like it a lot.

Meh. It's OK....nothing special though.

EPL has no sponsor. SPFL does have a sponsor. Therefore, SPFL > EPL. Welcome your new Scottish overlords.

So the SPFL needs subsidizing? Good to know.

What's the Scottish tv contract worth?

It's very different from any logos we're used to so it's hard to make a judgement until you see it on promos and ads and commercials and all that but I think it looks pretty sweet. I thought it was 4 different logos at first like the other guy. Removing the "Barclays" part is probably more important than the logo anyway.

I loved one of the comments on an article I saw for this today on a UK site...
"Looks like the flag of a tinpot african dictatorship"
But written in obvious British English.

quote:Me too. Shocked to hear that's the actual logo. Terrible IMO, looks like a little kid did it in 5 minutes.

The colour palette will be updated every three years and for now, includes bold shades of yellow, green, blue and a pinkish-red. “We want [the Premier League] to be known as very vibrant and bold and colourful, and we really wanted to get away from red, white and blue,” explains Watson. “The other interesting thing is that they’re not club colours – we’ve been really careful to make the colours our own.”
Apparently this will be the new "patch" worn on jerseys next season:

It's really their attempt to "modernize" it that falls short. The mark and logo are absolutely fine, and in fact, I think that aspect of it is pretty solid as far as rebranding goes.
Where it falls short is the way they put it to use. They might as well have been announcing that it was now the Microsoft Premier League. Fans of a sport that where so much history and tradition is a major part of the experience don't want to see some hip bullshite shoved in their face all day. I think that they should have stuck to the crest design with the lion head within it to minimize cheapening the look on the shirts, at least.
Personally, I think this is the exact opposite of the MLS rebrand. MLS debuted an absolutely hideous design that really did benefit from a fan showing how it could be used on anything and anywhere. The PL's has a solid logo and decent mark, but their attempt to show how it could be used in "colorful and vibrant" ways seems almost cheap and tacky for a league of its status.
