Just a good movie. Extra points for following closely.
IMO, I haven't found a movie that's better than its source material. But that has a ton to do with the limitations of fitting 20 hours of material into 2-3 hours.

The Godfather. Puzo must have been coked up when he wrote the book because it was complete trash. There was an entire chapter devoted to the size of Lucy Mancini's vagina. It shows you the talent Francis Ford Coppola had to polish that turd into a movie as good as The Godfather.

As a combo - in recent times, best book + best movie...
I'd put Seabiscuit up there. Hillenbrand knows how to spin a tale...and that movie was really good.

Jaws the book is absolutely awful. The movie didn't follow the book very closely (thank god).
I thought the godfather was a fantastic book, better than the movie. The movie follows the book pretty closely iirc, but the book also contains many elements of godfather 2.
