We'd be paying him 20 million dollars a year by now if we had done that.

That season after the national championship win was really special.

No amount of $ keeps Saban here. He had an itch to scratch and was not going to be denied.

Saban always eyed the nfl and held it as leverage against LSU and was a total A hole along the way in doing so. Sorry but Shaq is just wrong. Time for LSU fans to get over it.

Saban was in Skip Bertman's office with the owner of the Dolphins basically leveraging LSU's willingness to pay in order to get total control when he went to Miami.

OP and Shaq's assessment are completely untrue.

Jimmy Ott, however, has said Saban inquired to LSU as to whether or not they'd hire him back once he realized he didn't want to coach in the NFL anymore. That could have been a big mistake.

He was going to leave for the NFL. If it wasn't 2004, it would have been 2005. It just stung worse because his landing spot after failing was Tuscaloosa.

I have always believed we didn't do a good enough job selling Saban on staying at LSU and building a dynasty here. Deep down I think he knew college is where he's best suited and while he's done amazing things at Alabama, he will never be their Bear Bryant because they already had one. He could have been that here though.

He was going to the NFL to give it a shot, that was inevitable. What they should have done is everything possible to get him back, and kicked Miles to the curb.

Saban was the highest paid coach in college football when he left. Money had nothing to do with it

bull. LSU is not a pro team. to fire Miles at that point would have been a classless move of epic proportions, esp considering how Sabaan left LSU. he left us with a lousy bowl record, screwed our recruiting class of '05 and in a lurch to find his replacement.

nick saban was good for LSU because he woke up the adm. on what you have to do to win and he showed the fans they have to pony up to be the best.

but i'm glad the a-hole is gone. it's a shame he went to a competitor, esp fricking bama but i'm still glad. nick saban OWNS the university of Alabama. i'm glad he doesn't own my alma mater.

Shaq's comments are such captain hindsight. I love love
love Shaq but he's talking out of his arse with respect to Saban testing the waters, what LSU should have counter offered. It's easy to tell someone what to do after it's been done.

People overlook the fact that Alabama had a lot to do with Saban being this successful as a coach. Saban is a great coach but Alabama is a great place to coach. He couldn't have done the same thing at LSU that he did at Alabama.

It's possible that there was nothing that could have been done, but I don't think we did absolutely everything possible to keep him here. If I had been AD I would have offered him a contract with automatic escalators based on future TV money (even circa 2004 it was easy to see where things were going), and I would have sold him on staying at LSU the same way Wayne H. sold him on going to the Dolphins. That guy was on the phone with Saban every day begging him to come to south beach, telling him that while LSU had been good one day we would want to fire him (I specifically remember him mentioning in one of his last presser that he loved LSU but worried that one day he'd have 1 down year and we'd want him out. It sounded like he was repeating what was being sold to him.)

While Skip definitely talked to him a few times about staying it was clear we weren't going to roll the red carpet out and we weren't really going to do anything new for him. If it had been me I would have been posted up in his driveway and he'd of had to run me the hell over to get to the airport. Do you think bama would just let him go without a serious fight? helllll no. And that right there is the difference between LSU and Alabama.

Go look at how stacked our 2005-07 teams were. Those teams went 34-6 even without Saban on the sidelines. Plus if Saban stays we keep dominating the Mobile area in recruiting and all the sudden guys like Trent Richardson are Tigers (hell he almost was one anyway).

basically you have no idea what you're talking about. LSU has just as many resources to win at the highest level as Alabama does.

The product on the field during Saban's fifth and last year at LSU was worse than any team he's had at Alabama since his first season there.

He's had significantly more success since then, but there was no evidence in late 2004 (or 2006) to justify paying him double market rate.

I'd argue that Saban's final season at LSU was worse than the 2015 season that almost got Les Miles fired.

i've said all along that even if he returned for 2005 he would have almost certainly bailed after that year following all the katrina-related stuff that hovered over the team. that shite would have driven him insane.

and i love when people compare 2004 with 2015

better state for recruiting and bordered by Texas and Miss...he definitely could have built the same dynasty here...maybe been even better.

It was also insane for Saban to coach the Dolphins-- based on results.
