Aside from cheating, what makes a person a "great recruiter"?

I read all of these comments about how people like Ed Orgeron are great recruiters. What makes him a great recruiter? Would he be a great recruiter if he was coaching at ULM?
Is it a combination of school prestige and personal enthusiasm?

Energy, ability to read people, being genuine or at least the ability to appear genuine, and a track record.

Charisma. Some people just have an innate ability to make others like them and agree with them.

He's personable. He wouldn't get 5 stars to UL Monroe, but he would be able to get kids who may otherwise go to schools with slightly more prestige.

I've always thought I could be a good recruiter.

They're salesmen. Nothing more, nothing less. They have an innate ability to find what they need to say/do to get you to buy into their program.

Charisma and the ability to make a pitch to a kid that can't be refused.

side note, i wonder how common it has been over past couple decades for the head coach/recruiter to bang the recruiter's mother. i bet the mom's want them some coach dick and they got a lot of influence usually.

1. Have the well-rounded personality to develop and maintain a successful relationship with the recruit
2. Make sure recruit and his parents are comfortable with recruiter, staff, and school
3. Being able to identify early what a recruit values the most and hammering those interests
4. Highlighting and successfully selling program strengths and fits for the recruit
5. Have a support staff (non coaches) that tirelessly supplements the recruiting effort (social media, correspondence, etc)

Relating to the recruits is a big piece. Being a good salesperson also helps. A lot of these guys really do their homework; knowing a kid's parent or sibling's name goes a long way, keeping up with their stats, forming relayshs with their hs coach, etc

Since, for a lot of kids, Dad isn't around, the ability to sell your school to Mom.

This is like asking why someone is a good salesman. There's no way to put your finger on it. They usually have some defining quality that people like and are clearly knowledgeable in their field, which builds trust.

Coming off as genuine in your interactions with recruits so you can avoid moments like this:
quote:
Before Wilson’s lunch was served, he received what he thought was a great sign- a text message from McKnight, ripping on his counterpart, LSU assistant Larry Porter: “YOUR BOY PORTER IS SO FAKE!”

IMO it has everything to do with your ability to find ways to expound upon the favorable factors that your school offers while simultaneously eliminating the concerns a recruit has regarding the areas where your school is lacking, and doing so in a way that seems genuine.
There are many ways to do this but that is the general idea that they're all trying to achieve. Some recruiters are great at manipulating the pros of their school only, while some are great regardless of school.
