they are basically used car salesmen
they sell these parents on their bullshite.
you would be surprised how low some of them will sink to get an in with the mother(single parent homes especially).

Is it a combination of school prestige and personal enthusiasm?
same reason some people are good at sales and others are not, except in this case they're selling a football program. it's almost entirely related to personality and understanding people

In places like Alabama and Arkansas, it's probably pretty common.
I wouldn't sleep on it happening in Gainesville or Missouri, either.

You all are over-estimating the salesman part. It's about showing them you can get them to the NFL. It's not so much selling yourself, the program, the University and so on. It's about the NFL for the type of recruits that can win titles.

Ability to forge a "mentor" type of relationship, energy, ability to be genuine (even if you are faking it).... being black and closer in age to the recruit helps out a lot too...

I'm not sure that is the case for the majority of recruits anymore.
If you're a QB, maybe you're right, but the majority of elite skill position players and OL/DL can get to the NFL regardless of where they go to school. Having a ton of players in the NFL is a byproduct of being a great recruiter at a power program. This is a case where correlation does not imply causation.
I'd submit mid-2000s Miami as a perfect example of this situation. They were still sending tons of guys to the NFL every year, but as their results on the field started to take a nosedive, their recruiting rankings did as well. If getting to the NFL was such a concern then you wouldn't have seen Miami drop off the map.
I don't mean to imply that getting to the NFL isn't a priority for elite players, because obviously it is. However, I think many of these players realize that there are many paths you can take to get there.

I know the answers to all of this, due to being able to directly observe now-NFL players being recruited by coaches at LSU. I've seen the good, bad and ugly the five years I was involved with it.
Since this is the Rant, I won't share shite as it is a waste of time.
