I'm a lifelong Reds fan, and I agree with this decision. Betting on reds games while a manager is an obvious no-no and while I think his records as a player should stand, he lost his right to be in the hall of fame with his stupidity.

quote:Not really. If you're consistently betting on your team to win, not betting at all is at best a signal that you believe your team will lose and it's hard to prove you are above suspicion of negatively influencing your team. Hey, after all, he's Charlie Hustle and he'd never want to lose right? Sure, but did he love winning as a gambler more than winning as a manager?
Does the fact that he bet on his team to win help his cause any? I know some will say betting is betting, but I thought I read he only bet on his team to win?
For the games you have money on, do you behave irrationally (like in the management of the bullpen) in order to win today's game at the expense of tomorrow's?

The only "proof" baseball has that Rose did not bet on his team to lose is Rose's word. Consider that he is an admitted liar & has lied for several decades now. A gambler like he is....he is still betting on baseball, legally, now.....bets on everything.

he just violated one of those stupid unwritten rules
You mean the "unwritten rule" that is posted in every major and minor league clubhouse in the country?

Mike&Mike this morning had interesting take on the HOF. Rose's memorabilia is everywhere in the HOF. The only thing missing is his plaque and face. In the end what does it matter? It's basically a museum.

Hopefully this will be the last we hear about it.
His stats on the field should include him in HOF.
Gambling didn't come until he was a manager that we know of.
Don't reinstate, but let him in HOF and you know he will be back on FOX coverage.

That ledger says otherwise.

To be fair, MLB has no control of the HOF. They are separate entities so the decision to let him or any player into the Hall is the Hall's decision entirely.

He probably should not have admitted that he still bets on baseball.
I don't understand why Rose betting on baseball now should be used as an excuse to keep him out of the Hall of Fame.
He may have violated a rule to bet on baseball while he was in baseball but he only bet on his own team to win which should be a mitigating factor.
However, he is being treated the same as someone who bet against his own team and lost games to win the bets.
Rose has paid enough for his mistake and it is just ridiculous not to have some mercy on him.
The poor guy was actually crying about the latest decision.
Rose is probably the greatest hustler in baseball history and was a joy to watch.
Rose didn't play baseball for the money. He played baseball because he loved to play baseball.
I just hope Rose will be put in the Baseball Hall of Fame where he belongs before he dies.

There are some people who I disagree with so completely that conversation is useless. There's no reliable evidence that he only bet on his own team and there's no exemption allowed for people who only bet on their own team to win. It isn't a mitigating factor for reasons already spelled out in this thread.
He could have tried to rehabilitate himself but has made no discernibly sincere effort despite decades to reconsider. He is one of the more remarkable players from any era but that doesn't exempt him from due process or punishment. If he is ever put into the HOF I hope it is well after he dies and well after Shoeless Joe is introduced.

Ok. It looks like jeter is overrated then.

Rose is overrated, he wasn't one of the best of all-time, glad you brought Jeter into this when no one else did. Hope it eased the pain of cancer and a trailer burning

Ok. I know when I get something over on ya cause you start with the insults. Btw you weren't even alive when Pete played. He is not overrated and is a top 50 player of all time. Now the fact is that he bet on baseball which is wrong. If he would have apologized long ago he would be in.
Posted on 12/17/15 at 7:57 pm to dukke v
Pete Rose is overrated, my point stands, you have nothing on me.
