The problem with the whole situation is that no body not even the current commissioner knows everything from all accounts they couldn't prove that he did anything malicious he just violated one of those stupid unwritten rules. the sad fact is all the steroid guys such as a rod still play still get paid that is the hypocrisy of baseball

Why should he be reinstated?
He signed the agreement, he bet on baseball, he lied to the public, and he is paying the price.
Fair enough, but should the price really be this steep? I don't understand why baseball refuses to use any discretion in this matter.
If he would have murdered someone he would be out on parole at this point, yet baseball won't let him back in. It is ridiculous IMO, especially considering they'll use his image and likeness for their own gain whenever they want.

What?

I agree somewhat. But a-rod came clean. If Pete had just said what he did right away, things would be different IMO. But any stat that a-rod puts up is bogus and should not count.

not stupid, essential if you want to have a sport where the results are credible.
not unwritten, it is posted in every clubhouse and he agreed to the terms

You can get a lesser sentence for murder.

Yet, he never bet that his team would lose with all the inside information he had in front of him, game to game.He only bet on them to win. Yea. OK.
I think you are saying he DID bet on his team to lose. and you are right.

Society has been conditioned that there are no consequences for bad behavior, and fame & fortune don't exempt you from keeping your nose clean. The Pete Rose saga serves as a good example for young people.

Holy frick. This may be the dumbest thing I've read on the website in 5 years.

It's called the Dowd Case.
Is that why they named Barry Bonds something like John Dowd in the mlb video games? I can't remember if there was some issue where he didn't agree to his likeness being used or some kind of punishment.
ETA: I looked it up and apparently it was a coincidence that one of the designers or producers of the game was named Jon Dowd and that's who his character was named after. Also Barry and a few others were not a part of the players union. The game makers only reached an agreement with the union and not individually with Bonds and others.

He should never be reinstated. He is a complete moron. He gambled on his team and even though he knows that is the issue continues to gamble on baseball.
PS - He broke the rules and I do not care if he was the best, he should remain banned.

Good. I don't like the guy.
There was a locker room interview with him after his hit streak was broken. He complained that the opposing pitcher pitched like it was the seventh game of the World Series. Whining hypocrite.

As much as I would like to see him get in, he shouldn't. Make an example of him, MLB Execs.

Yeah, I watched that game. It was against the Braves in Atlanta and the pitcher was the Braves reliever at that time, Gene Garber.
And, yes, he pitched like it was the seventh game of the World Series, because back then the Braves were losing about 100 games a year and they didn't have much else to play for. So fricking Pete Rose out of getting the record was fricking AWESOME.

Here's an interesting nugget from commissioner Rob Manfred's report on upholding Pete Rose's permanent ban from baseball: Rose initially lied to the commissioner only to later "clarify" that he does, in fact, still bet on baseball.

Here's an interesting nugget from commissioner Rob Manfred's report on upholding Pete Rose's permanent ban from baseball: Rose initially lied to the commissioner only to later "clarify" that he does, in fact, still bet on baseball.
quote:
The pertinent part of the five-page press release here is as follows:
"During our meeting, Mr. Rose told me that he has continued to bet on horse racing and on professional sports, including baseball. Those bets may have been permitted by law in the jurisdictions in which they were placed, but this fact does not mean that the bets would be permissable if made by a player or manager subject to Rule 21."
There's a footnote, too, which includes one of the most damning facts about Rose's case.
"Even more troubling, in our interview, Rose initially denied betting on baseball currently and only later in the interview did he 'clarify' his response to admit such betting."
So he lied. Again.
That's probably a poor way to go about being reinstated to baseball.

Does the fact that he bet on his team to win help his cause any? I know some will say betting is betting, but I thought I read he only bet on his team to win?

I am pretty sure there were times when he bet on his team to lose but it should not matter anyway.

The rule is absolute. Betting on your team is a permanent ban.
