I saw this thread way earlier this morning, wanted to post "Hunt for Red October" but never even clicked on the thread out of fear of being told that it wasn't a true Naval movie, thinking the thread would be mostly pre-1970's WW2 classics. Boy I could not have been more wrong.

My only issue would be - because Submarines are a popular setting - it is isolated and confined - the opponent is mysterious and unseen - it is almost a separate sub-genre altogether - for all practical purposes, Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan is a submarine movie (or, it contains all of the elements that makes submarines such compelling settings).
On the other hand, carrier aviation films are likewise almost a different creature, too - because of the nature and scope of such films. Midway, The Final Countdown and Top Gun being the notable ones here.
Another pre-1970 (despite the OP's attempts to limit the scope of the thread) naval film, that is often listed on "best films of all time" and certainly a highly influential film is the silent film Battleship Potemkin.
