In the grand scheme of things? For example, starting up your own firm.

No. It is better to be in the top 10% of a lowly regarded law school than to be back of the pack at a mid-tier. Obviously, the top 20 schools are tickets to the game in larger firms in larger cities, but you're just joining another highly competitive game at that point.
If you're going to hang out your own shingle - either soon after graduating, or after 3 to 5 years learning the ropes at a family/friend firm or a smaller firm in a smaller town, where you went to law school or what it was ranked will mean little, if anything to your long-term success. Competence, hard work, hustle to get clients and luck - in some combination will be far more important.

Starting your own firm? No. Not at all.
You just have to sell yourself. Every time you meet a potential client, you're really at a job interview.
Clients don't give a shite where you went to law school. They just want a winner.
Firms care about law school rankings. Prospective students care about law school rankings.
They do matter, but they aren't everything.

If you want to be a Supreme Court Justice you had better go to Yale, Harvard, or Stanford.

Do you hear anything on those TV ads about:
"Hey, I was on Law Review?"
"I went to Harvard?"
"I graduated top 10 in my class?"
That crap don't matter!

As long as you didn't go to Southern Law

I don't even remember my law school ranking. That's how unimportant it is to everyone except civil defense firms.

I got into a top 10 school and had to withdraw due to crippling OCD and anxiety. It haunts me every day of my life.

Hell no.
They don't matter unless you are going to work at 6 minute intervals. Even then, no, not really.

If you want to do corporate, yes. It also helps with networking. Otherwise, not a ton.

You better have went to Harvard and top 1% if you want to go to Pearson Spector Litt.

Seems like it would be pretty tough to start a firm from nothing straight out of law school

Ummm
I'd guess not always. Unless if you live in the big metro areas (NYC, dc, Philly etc)

If it consoles you I graduated from American Samoa University.
Our top grad was a man named Saul
Pretty shady but reliable and a winner

I have friends with Southern Law degrees that are doing well and friends with LSU Law degrees that couldn't hack it as attorneys.
The better school will get you in with better firms at the start.
A degree from a shitty school followed by a great track record as an attorney will get you into a decent firm.
If you're going it on your own, doesn't matter where your degree is from.

No, unless you are going for a top 50 firm. Just get that first job and start getting experience. Find a niche area if you can.I get calls from recruiters all the time and I went to a crap law school. I do tax, trust and estates work for clients that have federal estate tax exposure. I have been in this area for about 8 years.

Getting a job out of state at a big firm us really the only thing it matters for.
