My band in the 90s covered this and our singer purposefully didn't bother to find the actual lyrics and just sang it like it sounded. Nobody would question it. Same thing with State of Love and Trust.

I had always heard the opening line of John Conlee's Common Man as "They made port wine as we prepared to dine." Wasn't until I heard it live on the Opry this spring that I realized he was saying "The maid poured wine..."

I had a friend, who as a kid thought the lyrics to The Wall included:
"The Dukes of Hazard In the Classroom".
Not a misheard lyric...but a had another friend who thought Wichita Lineman was about a football player...."I am a lineman for the county".
