So I'm having to teach a class about the Spanish Empire. Particularly, Hernan Cortes and Francisco Pizarro. These were bad dudes. In addition to killing shite loads of people, Pizarro had the nerve to nail Atahualpa's wife.

I don't think your typical American realizes how purely brutal the Spanish really were to indigenous pop's compared with other colonizing nations.

Spaniards were dark souls in general around those times. Fresh off the heels of the inquisitions.

This is why Donald Trump needs to build a border fence

If decimating an entire population with disease, destroying one of the most advanced civilizations in the world and forcibly trying to convert the survivors to Christianity makes someone a "bad dude," then sure. The story of the clash of civilizations and the reaction of the conquistadors and the Aztec to the encounter, is, however one of the more interesting topics in (relatively) recent history. The conquistadors' minds were blown, and the letters written by Cortes back home are pretty incredible to read.

It defies description in words - as bad or worse as the worst abuses of slavery in the Southern U.S. states (and Confederacy), and on a much wider scale.

Yep, like taking the baddest-assed cartel there is and then sticking it on steroids and cutting it loose on an entire continent.

They were almost as bad as the Aztecs with their human sacrifice extravaganzas.

And they did it in the name of the Lord.

They were extraordinarily lucky too, and took advantage of the natives' ignorance. I think it was like 167 men that defeated an army of over 10,000. Tricky bastards.

"The Last Days of the Incas" by McQuarrie is a seriously good read.

I recently read the book "The Last Days of the Incas." Incredible story. Pizarro and 167 men took down an empire. At times they faced off against armies of over 80,000 men, and won because of a few dozen horses, armor, and the fear element. And they just raped that region of its gold, melting down what would now be priceless artifacts. I really wish they'd make a good movie about the conquistadors - maybe pick up where "Apocalypto" left off.

Not defending the Spaniards here at all... they were very arrogant, murderous invaders.

But one of the great illusions of history is how the Aztecs are seen as the victims of the Spaniards in history. The Aztecs were just as oppressive, violent and sadistic to their subject tribes as the Spanish were to them.

Need evidence? When Cortez told the Mexican natives that he was going to dethrone the Aztec Empire, tribe after tribe flocked to his banner.

They preferred THAT dude to the crew in Tenochtitlan.

BOTH sides were pretty sick in the head. Do yourself a favor and read Diaz's account of the Siege of Tenochtitlan. It is some of the most desperate and shocking combat ever seen on the world stage. The aftermath reads like a horror show.

This thread is worthless without pics (or paintings in this case) of Atahualpa's wife.

While not excusing the brutality of the Spanish in colonizing the Americas, it's important to remember the history of Spain up to the Age of Exploration. For the ~770 years of the Reconquista, the Christian Kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula had been at war with the Muslim Kingdoms and with each other. The centuries of warfare (and for many years, existential threat) left their mark on the Spanish culture, particularly in the way that the Spanish interacted with non-Christians. The Inquisition can be seen as a religious follow-up to the Reconquista to convert the remaining Jews and Muslims to solidify Christian Spanish rule.

(If you've never read about the Reconquista, I highly recommend looking into it. The influence of Islamic expansion on the development of one of the pre-eminent European powers of the early modern era is fascinating.)
