Had one of those appear about a month ago right under where we had put a slip-n-slide the day before. I had taken the slide up as soon as Tigerdeacon, Jr. and his friends were done playing but I guess the heat just killed it. I turned the sprinkler system up higher in that area and it has almost completely recovered.

I'd bet it's a fungus....doesn't look like chinch bug damage.

You are probably right, especially since its widespread throughout other yards.
It just seems like the insects show up in the weak spots and continue damage, definately worth a quick look.
CSB below
When I was in the golf biz, we had chinch bugs and adult japanese beetles wearing out a few of the greens. We hit them with sevindust at sundown and the next morning was one of the most spectacular things I have ever seen.
The greens were pure black with insects, it was cool as shite mowing them up.

So you would suggest sevin dust for chinch bugs? I don't know if it is a fungus or not, but just to be sure it is not chinch bugs, what would you recommend me putting down in these areas?

Look's like "Take All Root Rot". Pull some of the brown spot up if the root is Brown, slimely and smells it's the fungus. Fertilome "F-Stop" will cure it.

I'm not sure what it is but I'd hit it with fungicide and insecticide both. No reason not to and either can do a massive amount of damage to your lawn. Don't take your time about it either.

Thank you. I will do this too.
This is a pic of the brown spot in my yard this morning...

I'll echo what others have said. I have some spots like this that just popped up as well and so do a lot of yards in my neighborhood.

Treated mine in the past for chinch and fungus, turns out it was dog piss spots.
However, my spots were not nearly that dark and much more light brown almost yellowish in color.
Guessing you got fungus, but Google the method to check for chinch bugs. If not chinch, then get you some fungicide.

Root look OK...don't smell and not slimey.
Just went out and took a really close look at it. No bugs that I could see. Right now, it just looks dry as shite and dead. Freaking weird.

Same here. Doesn't look like root rot, fungus, or bugs. It was green Wednesday. I noticed my spot when I got home yesterday afternoon. It was like somebody poured gas on it while I was at work. What is even more strange is the amount of people in the thread saying the exact same thing is happening to them. I would assume it has something to do with it being so hot then the downpour of rain.
