What's the OT's thoughts on couples who raise money to adopt a baby?

I'm starting to see couples on Facebook who are starting "go fund me" type pages to raise money to adopt a kid. This seems so weird to me. Wouldn't you take more pride in coming up with the money on your own? To each their own but it seems like a bad way to start off the whole parenting thing. Raising a kid is a lot more costly than the actual adoption. If you can't afford the adoption, how do you plan on raising him or her?

Adopting is expensive as frick, and also a very noble thing to do. There are worse reasons to ask for help IMO.

True but that cost is spread out over time. It's not easy for most people to come up with $20,000+ for adoption.

Its better than having them naturally just so the government can fund you?

I'm all for adoption. I think the adopting part is amazing. I just find it strange to ask for money. But yes, there are worse things to raise money for.

Nobody has pride anymore. Every day someone is raising money for something they would have been too embarrassed to even ask their family for 10 years ago.

I never understood that. If the end goal is to place children in a good home then why make it so goddamn expensive? You can adopt a puppy for like $50.

This.

Watched my buddy go through all the crap to adopt a kid. Cost him some serious jack all in one go.

On a different note; people begging for money left and right via Go Fund Me lately. Not sure I approve of it yet but I have been giving to people. Seems like individuals I know are better charities than some of the shite I've given to in the past where 75 cents on the dollar goes to administrative costs.

Because $20,000 may exhaust ones life savings. It's not like the adoption agencies let you finance your new kid. I'm sure most of these people get the most help from parents and such, but it doesn't ever hurt to ask for help from your friends.

So they don't get adopted by vunnables looking for a check.

Pretty much this.

But also, if you can't afford it, you shouldn't expect other people to afford it for you in my opinion. Medical bills for someone with cancer? Ok I can see that. Home lost in a fire? Here's a few bills.

You want kids but can't have them? I'm not sure I donate to that.

Exactly & I don't get it either. When it comes to adoption kids that are "in the system", Florida has it going on....seriously!!

Edit: Thanks King

i don't have a problem with it b/c adoption is an amazing thing most of the time, but this likely means they care more about skin color than raising a kid

Who says they expect anything? That's a pretty big assumption.

Why not eliminate the check... and eliminate the ridiculously high adoption fees?

If you go into it knowing that you're not going to receive compensation then that should eliminate the people just looking for $$$... but at the same time make adoption more obtainable for couples wanting children.

I admire people like Wtodd, FWIW. It takes a special person to adopt IMHO. Good on you and your family!
