It was almost as if he operated on another level amongst the masses with very few (Dawkins, Hawking) remotely close. The guy belonged to another class with Socrates and Plato. I was just reviewing his work and it's astounding.

Possibly. If not, he certainly came across as such.

if all is predestined, as you postulate, wtf does it matter...? if the Universe has already been?
and we are memory...the memory is us....or, not.

on some things, yes. his political views are a little ehhh

one of my favorite writers, though. he had an eloquence and beauty to his writing that I haven't seen matched. he sounded extremely intelligent without being gratuitously verbose. even if you disagreed with him, you appreciated his argumentation

he could put smackdowns on people like no other

I wonder if he was deliberately sent to confuse the point regarding Orwell

While I agree that he was right on the most important question that faces man, he was always drunk which I feel is the opposite

your standard atheist here, perhaps too young to understand why this guy was so important

seemed to me more like a clever writer who would say abrasive things to get people who already agreed with him to cheer

i don't really see too many philosophers or cultural critics as being remotely hero-worthy though. i do find it incredibly lame when people use the term "enlightened" unironically though

Hey, where did OP go? I feel like he abandoned us. That's awfully rude of him.

how would you really be able to judge that, unless you were at least equally enlightened. and, then, how would you know that?

Most enlightened thinker of our time? Haha, not even close. That's a laughable statement.

He was eloquent, that's for sure. He was good at criticizing people and doing so very brashly. But a lot of his beliefs were backwards and many of his arguments crumble when you think about them at all critically. He defended the war in Iraq up until his death and mocked people who suggested that it wasn't a good idea or that it wouldn't be as easily won as the Bush administration insisted. He often abused science in his arguments, appealing to things like evolutionary psychology that he obviously had no understanding of.

I always enjoyed his writing and ability to debate with people on religion. It's a shame the majority of people don't know much about him.
