The amount of hyperbole about Ben Simmons (just see Jay Bilas' twitter feed yesterday) seems out of the box leading up to the season. Are we Kentucky this year, in the sense that if we make the Final Four and lose the first game there, is that considered a failure? Especially considering that we only have Ben for one year?

Short form question: Can Johnny survive Ben Simmons without a national championship?

Since LSU has won so many national championships in its basketball history I'm going to say yes he will survive without a national championship.

Look.. I understand we have the number 1 player in the country and all, but that doesn't mean we'll be anywhere close to the number 1 TEAM in the country. We'll probably be a 4/5 seed in the tourney and should be happy if we make the sweet 16. Stop the National Championship talk

Anyone expecting a final four run is an idiot. Too many variables in the NCAA tournament.

Yes. Making the SEC championship game and alteast the Sweet 16 will be seen as a success by the admins, but the negatigers won't be happy unless we go undefeated, with the natty, cure HIV/AIDS, and build the BR Loop.

I would consider making it to the Sweet 16 a success and making the Final 4 a pipe dream. One amazing player doesn't = championship expectations.

No.

We should be ecstatic if we make it to the final four...

disagree. John Brady went to a final four with a less competent staff.

you go after and get the best talent in the world and fans tend to expect big things.

JJ has progressed each year. At some point (soon), JJ will be expected to get be in position to and therefore win a natty.

Also, to think and believe that this team has the talent to win a natty is not crazy. Why can't we expect it?? Simmons, alone, is a VERY exceptional talent. Who was the last VERY exceptional talent to win a natty? Anthony Davis. Before that? Melo. And, they both completely dominated.

no, but Simmons has the team around him that can do it. It's ok to expect greatness when you go after and receive great players.

Am I expecting a national championship? No.

Is it unreasonable to think we could get to a final four? Absolutely not.

Right. Anthony Davis was the only good player on that 2012 national championship team.

did I say that? no. In fact, [after] that, I said that Simmons has the team around him to pull it off.

Outside of Simmons, 1 Maybe 2 of our players are good enough to get drafted. SIX, yes, SIX of those kentucky wildcats got drafted. And Wiltjer is still an all-american at Gonzaga. Not saying we aren't talented but a comparison to 2012 Kentucky is absolutely ignorant.

SEC Regular Season Champions
SEC Tournament Champions
Final Four
National Champions

Anything less is considered a failure.

I think many LSU will be disappointed if we don't make the Final 4. Is this a reasonable expectation? Probably not.

I say Elite 8 with Simmons winning the Wooden (popularity contest) should meet the unreasonable expectations of next year.

Saying Final 4 or bust is just stupid. Kevin Durant was bounced in the 2nd round while he was at Texas with DJ Augustin as his PG.

Anything short of a sweet 16 is a disappointment, IMO. Anything after that would be awesome.
