A driver for Uber is an employee, not a contractor, according to a California ruling that eventually could push up costs for the smartphone-based ride hailing service and hurt the closely watched start-up's valuation.

No.
It very well may. Uber is about to be subject to Obamacare, Title VII, etc.

Nah. CA has some strange contract employee rules.

I hate our Judicial branch.
And the Executive
And Legislative.

Used uber for the first time today. 3 separate rides and never waited longer than 2 minutes. I'm in Seattle for work and it was incredible.

It may change the business model a bit and might affect cost but the platform for operation won't change.

The same court had previously ruled in favor of Uber. Now it seems that the court thinks the employee/contractor line has been crossed. Could be bad news when CA applies this to all Uber drivers and the lawsuits start up in other states.

I think regular cab drivers in louisiana are independent contractors

Yes, and I don't think this is just a CA thing. The Department of Labor and the National Labor Relations Board are trying to expand the Joint Employer status. Not sure if it will reach all the way to a truly independent contractor like an Uber driver though.

no. Will just require a change in the contract
