So LSU is "shameless" in the promotion of Ben Simmons?

I would hope that Mr. Bilas would look at where his own check comes from before calling out LSU.

Ben Simmons was on ESPN’s Family of Networks no less than six times between Dec. 12 and April 4 (and would have been a seventh before backing out of the Jordan Brands Classic). And how much did he get for his six appearances on ESPN?

ZERO. NOTHING. NADA.

What does he get from LSU, a full ride scholarship. Room, board, access to premium facilities and an education.

Seems like a much better deal than what the world wide leader gave him for his six appearances on their networks.

Today’s “debate” begs the question, who exactly is “exploiting” athletes? I haven’t seen ESPN, Geico, McDonald’s and Dick’s being accused of such wrong-doing by the op-ed media today.

Here are the dates of the games and ESPN press releases that use the names of the athletes – not just their schools – and ESPN’s own recruiting rankings when promoting these games.

GEICO ESPN High School Basketball Showcase
Dec. 12 (ESPN2)
Jan. 19 (ESPNU)

McDonald's All-American game
April 1 (ESPN)
LINK

DICK'S Sporting Goods, Inc. High School Nationals
April 2 (ESPNU)
April 3 (ESPN2)
April 4 (ESPN)
LINK /

?Again, these are HIGH SCHOOL athletes.

Not college kids. HIGH SCHOOL.

And Jay Bilas wants to claim that LSU and the NCAA is exploiting people?

Look in the mirror.

This is the main reason I haven't given one F about what ESPN had to say about the Simmons thing. It's wrong to exploit student athletes for monetary gain? Then College Football Live, broadcasting of college football, basketball, baseball, etc should all be taken off the air. For crying out loud, ESPN has an entire channel (ESPNU) dedicated to the covering of college athletics. Oh yeah, the Under Armour all American game should be cancelled too. And ESPN subscribers who pay for recruiting info should be fully refunded. ESPN shouldn't make a dime off of college athletes if they feel this way.

It's absolutely hypocritical. I honestly wonder how much money ESPN would lose if they didn't make anything off of college sports. Hell, without college sports, ESPN probably isn't the most well known name in sports.

Well said sir. However, Bilas' check comes from stirring the pot with his schtick.

LSU doesn't. But the NCAA most definitely does.

Good post. Reps from the big networks are in no position to be calling out the schools.

But this doesn't absolve LSU and all the other schools of the current situation.

Yes, athletes get compensated. But the amount of money the schools and networks make far outweighs the compensation the athletes receive.

I have no problem with the athletes demanding more. It's how the system works. You think you're worth more, you demand more. And the schools (and hopefully the networks) are eventually going to have to pay up.

Bilas has also banged the drum of college players not getting paid for a long time and says the NCAA exploits college players. If that's true and he feels that strongly about it, then Bilas should resign his job because, after all, he works for a company that profits from said "exploitation" of college players.

I'm tired of the "players should get paid" argument and I'm tired of the pompous-arse Jay Bilases of the world. Most college players get a full scholarship in basketball and football and a platform upon which they can showcase their talents for professional sports employers. I'm sorry but the 53rd guy on a football team should not be paid.

The "shameless promotion" article is a Yahoo article.

The ESPN article says,
"Given there’s a chance Simmons will only wear an LSU uniform for about six months, though, it makes sense to make the most of it."

Bilas thinks college athletes deserve a cut. Nothing anti-lsu involved.

We've been trying to tell you guys that ESPN hates LSU.

Its the same bullshite, that piece they ran with about Miles over signing players. He did it once in 10 years and the hat kid eventually became our starting center. Yet Miles is a habitual over signer and teams like bama, auburn, tamu, Tenn just get a free pass.

Bilas started to take his anal obsession with the NCAA too far a couple of years back, and I think because he got a lot of pats on the back for it, he has kept his foot on the pedal and IMHO he has no credibility any more when he speaks on the subject because he's so over the top in taking every opportunity to blast them on anything they do.
