It’s one thing to hear about the severity of the drought out West, but images of Lake Mead, on the Colorado River, show an unprecedented drop in its water level and hammer home the severity of the drought.

Lake Mead, the nation's largest reservoir, is filled to only 40 percent of capacity. The 14-year drought in the area surrounding the Colorado River basin has resulted in an astounding 150-foot drop in water levels.

The bleached “bathtub ring” visible on the banks of Lake Mead towers more than a hundred feet over passing pleasure boats. “To see it in person is simply jaw-dropping, ” said photographer Justin Sullivan, who captured these powerful images.

Caesar's fountains use a lot of water. Bellagio's show is eating up the rest.

What is the second largest reservoir?

Maybe the folks over at that reservoir have been springing leaks in the Hoover Dam so they can get the new notoriety.

Where did it go?

It's on earth somewhere, right?

Wouldn't melting icebergs help with water?

BTW, biggest polluters on earth are communists.

maybe we should stop building cities in a freaking desert. Especially cities that have an expectionally high demand for water.

A guy called into Howard Stern back in the 90s. He was water skiing at night and the water level was low. He didn't see a fence post in the water. He nailed it and it ripped off his penis. He said he was left with a nub.

I agree...kind of sobering to see how low it is in person. Feel the same way at Lake Travis.

Wait, wait, so you're telling me we're gonna build the nations largest reservoir in the heart of the Great American Desert where all these big assed dried up lake beds are located, and then expect it to supply the one of biggest tourist destinations replete with luscious golf courses and green landscapes?

Just as well to build a major city in a below sea-level bog.

I saw this recently in person. I didn't recognize that it was at such a low point. What seemed like a much more fragile ecosystem on the verge of collapse was Lake Walker, just a few hundred miles north of here. Its basin is clearly demarcated and declining of the last few decades. Partially due to drout, partially from upstream damming, but the resultant decline of lake depth, increasing salinity, and recent loss of a freshwater fishery was fairly astounding to see in person.

I was on the river last week and at the 'abandoned' Echo Bay marina not too long ago. The pictures show some old pumps but they just moved the docks and you could still rent boats there as recently as October. They have some nice stripers that swim right up to the front door of the marina.
