Rodgers was far from a win now player when he was drafted.

The debate was 50-50 on whether or not he or Alex Smith would be the #1 pick.

If we as saints fans arent allowed to judge the saints draft, then who is? They get to just go unjudged?

The people who are paid to. That was the point of my whole post, actually.

This makes zero sense. Only Mel Kiper and Todd McShay get to have an opinion on the draft? Wut

I'm not even talking about those clowns. So the people making the picks have no opinion on the players they draft?

You and I can have our own opinions on the draft, but it holds zero weight. The people paid to make the decisions know better than anyone about a certain player.

Thats not true. People who get paid to make decisions make terrible decisions based on faulty reasoning all the time.

But thats not even the point. You said "who am i to judge" as if you cant judge their decision. Of course you can. If the saints drafted Nick Marshall in the first round, would you not judge them?

Sheesh. Ok, so we as fans will judge if they pick Petty at 31. We're entitled to it, but in the case of the draft, it will never matter. I will like the pick. You may not. In the grand scheme of things, what's the difference? There is none, because they picked him, and for a reason.

@RapSheet: Saw @BobMcGinn mention the #Saints high praise of Bryce Petty. From what I understand, real chance he’s goes in round 1. Flying up boards

If we are going to draft a QB, I prefer that its in the 1st round so we get that 5th year option. Very important in this day and age.

However, I would prefer we didn't. Next year or the year after seem much more appropriate.

This. You don't dump 2, young, offensive playmakers to "make this defense better", then take a QB with the 1st rounder you acquired. I can't follow that logic.

Maybe trade the 31 pick a few spots back and big up a late round pick? Then get Petty sometime between 36-40? I haven't followed the Saints all that closely but would this make sense for them?

Taking a QB in the 1st 2 rounds doesn't make much sense with the needs if they truly want to "win now", IMO. I don't mind the trade back, but don't take a QB now.

ETA: I think this is fodder to build up trade value for 31.

Goes back to the 5th year option. Only first rounders get that. Petty could expect to sit at least two years, so that 5th year is big. That's the dilemma in all of this because we obviously have bigger needs at the moment. But, if we truly see Petty as our next guy, I have no problems with picking him at 31.

I like him at 31. Brees for 2 more years and then Petty for 15.

{Petty will be 26 in 2 years. I don't see him playing 17 years.

So you have 1-2 examples of it working out. Most 1st round QBs don't work out.

Also, the rookie payscale wasn't in place yet.

You do when your current QB is old and approaching the end of his career and the one you are drafting is the right fit to replace him. QB is too important of a position to ignore.

If Brees were 32, then I'd agree with you. He isn't. The last thing we need is to be stuck without a QB when Brees retires or is possibly maybe even playing for another team when his contract expires. You always need to be prepared for the future at that position

I wouldn't want a QB in the 1st round but at least they're trying to solve a future problem. Gotta face the fact that we need a QB that can take over in the next few years. Those kind of QBs don't hang out in the 6th rounds anymore

Who in god's name said it mattered?

Also you keep acting like, because its their job, and they have a reason, that any pick they make is good/justified. Thats ridiculous.

I wouldn't be suprized if a team selected Petty in one of the top 15 picks. There are some really desperate teams out there. So he might not even last until the 31st pick.
