Shipley's kolaches are not good, to me their sausage tastes just like a boiled hot dog weenie

Then you definitely aren't getting a good one. Here in Bham that is certainly not the case. Did you happen to try and of the other ones, or are you basing your opinion solely off of the sausage ones?

next time you are in Texas get kolaches from Prasek's, Mornings Kolaches, or Naeglin's Bakery and they blow Shipley's out the water

Add Hruska's to that list and I agree

Apple Fritters from Mary Lee's, and Bavarian Cream filled from Dunkin Donuts.

While I like Shipley's in general, the Shipley's in Bunkie is on a whole other level. They're the best I've ever had -- the strawberry and cream filled are out of this world.

In BR, the hot glazed straight from the conveyor belt at KK on Plank are tough to beat. Mary Lee are OK, as are some of the other Asian-owned and mom-and-pop shops, but don't even get me started on Mr. Ronnie's -- those things are like rocks. I feel like I've eaten a lead weight smothered in glaze every time I make the mistake of eating one.

I agree with this. I was really disappointed in the Ronnie's in BR after hearing all the hype about them.

For fritters, I like Starlite which is part of some group that has opened us a few places in cenla all with different names. Don't like the filled fritters from Shipley's.

At least Ronnie's fries theirs themselves -- Dunkin Donuts just ships them in frozen and then sticks them in the proofer for a little while

Best donuts ever are in the Magnolia/El Dorado, Arkansas, area. Spudnuts. Made with potato flour.

I tear up just thinking about them...

What do you all think of District Donuts in New Orleans? I thought they were pretty amazing albeit different/hipsterish and not your usual standard donut.

Not a fan. When I think of a good doughnut I think about it being light and airy with just the right amount of sweet glaze on it. What District does is quite the opposite. Their doughnuts aren't fried they're baked so there's only so much you can do as far as texture. They offer a cake-like doughnut which I don't like. I'm also not in to putting a bunch of toppings or fillings in there either which is pretty much everything @ District. I know people love them but they seem a little too trendy for my taste. Just fry a light doughnut and put some glaze on it.
