From grantland.com, an interview with Rick Springfield on the song Jessie's Girl. I mean, what an absolutely fantastic pop song.

And pop songs that are great songs deserve their due.

Nice insight. There were some great pure pop songs in the 80s. One that stands out to me is ABC - The Look of Love.

Yeah, it used to be that way.

Madonna - Like A Prayer. This one still holds up for me.

And I actually might consider this song -- Michael Jackson - Man in the Mirror -- to be the best song of the entire decade.

TWas my favorite Madonna song. Still have it on my MP3.

80's had the best pop music, and the worst.

Player- Baby Come Back

Tears for Fears- Everybody Wants to Rule the World

Michael Jackson- I Just Can't Stop Loving You

Sheryl Crow- All I Wanna Do
It sucks, pop music used to be great. You could turn on the radio and hear different types of music on the same station.

80s were really good for pop music (not so good for rock music).
Madonna refined the sound dance music from blaring disco music into modern dance music. There were secondary players in that arena (Gloria Estefan, e.g.), but she's the queen.

And Hall & Oates were a great blues-pop band.

How has the greatest of all time from the 80's not been mentioned?

Prince:

When Doves Cry
Purple Rain
1999
Little Red Corvette
Delirious
Darling Nikki
Raspberry Beret
Kiss
...and many more

There's no doubt that pop music ain't what it used to be, but there are still some diamonds in the rough.

For example, I don't care what you think about Taylor Swift, but God bless her for writing what I consider to be a damn near perfect pop song.

I also consider this one by Charli XCX to be a 5-star pop song: Boom Clap
