Everyone loves Primanti Bros. I found it pretty good, but nothing special.

On a side note, go see the Cathedral of Learning on the Pitt campus....pretty cool!

You'll have fun. Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Columbus, Indy, etc. all get a bad vibe from Southerners but they are all nice, fun cities.

Pittsburgh is a cool city. The sports facilities along the rivers are awesome.

How is Fat Heads in Pittsburgh? I haven't been to the one there, but I had a guy here in Portland tell me he doesn't go to the one here, because it's a "chain". Technically, it may be, but if the beer is good, I don't care.

Fat Heads on Carson is good for beer and food if drunk. Food is meh if sober.
Church Brew Werks has a great building with meh beer and food but really cool building.
Caliente Pizza has alright pizza but a good beer list.
Meat and Potatoes has good drinks, alright beer list and a fantastic hamburger.
Thin Man sandwhiches and Penn Ave Fish Company for lunch are in the strip district and really good.
Primantis are all over and not good at all but it is famous there so go once just to say you did.
All of those places are either walking distance or short cab ride from Consol Center.

Off the top of my head:
Highly recommend Hofbrauhaus - best freakin beer and in a good location in South Side
Fatheads >>> Primanti
Meat and Potatoes - gastropub, good atmosphere
Butcher and the Rye - probably need rez - one of our go to spots
All the places in the Strip District are cool, find Vietnamese lady selling Banh Mis, you will thank me
Cure - definitely need rez - house cured meats
Industry Public House - good place to drink
Tender Bar and Kitchen - good place to drink
Dish Ostaria Bar - cool spot in Southside, off of carson st
Smoke - highly recommend, BYOB, craft beer store next door
Jerome Bettis Grille - decent sports bar to watch games - you can pee and look out into the restaurant at the same time, fun stuff
Umi - best sushi in Pitt
BRGR - Good burger joint and place to drink
Piccola Forno - great Italian
Drink in Southside, eat in Lawrenceville

If you want to grab some bottles to bring back then Giant Eagle Supermarkets are your best bet. There is a good one in Robinson on the way to the airport.
The only beer up there I really loved was Head Hunter. Fatheads sales 4 packs of it and also fills growlers and it is available at Giant Eagle. If for some reason Columbus Brewing started distributing there then their regular ipa is good but their IIPA Bodhi is one of the best ever. Burn your clothes and fill your suit case with it.

Definitely go to Fat Heads. Great brewery from Ohio, have a restaurant/brew pub in Pitt. Head Hunter is a great IPA, and most of their stuff is very above average.

Dude, that's "sells"...
I can drink some Head Hunter. For some reason, they have never had their DIPAs on tap when I've been. I've seen Head Shrinker on tap at other places, but haven't had it yet. I've yet to try their Hop Ju Ju...

I'm usually a southwest guy for beer muling alone...free bag check!
Looks like I'll shell out $25 to bring some back with US airways. Will just charge the nola krewe.

I'm Pittsburgh-born and bred. Some good recs in this thread. I'm a big fan of the sandwiches at Fatheads. I haven't been to Meat and Potatoes but I've heard good things. I'm also a fan of Beto's pizza, which is a style of pizza unique to The Ohio River Valley. DiCarlo's is my absolute favorite but I'm not sure if they have one in the Burgh.
