Speaking at a press conference held on Tuesday, Iwata explained: "As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business, let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand-new concept under the development codename 'NX'. It is too early to elaborate on the details of this project, but we hope to share more information with you next year."

It is not clear whether the new hardware represents new strides in the handheld or home console business.

However, the new platform appears to be developed in unison with a new membership (or perhaps subscription) service that will unite Nintendo's home consoles, its handhelds, as well as mobiles and PC.

Iwata clarified that this new membership service will "encompasses the existing Nintendo 3DS and Wii U systems, the new hardware system with a brand-new concept, NX, and smart devices and PCs."

Could Nintendo finally be bringing some of the older games to mobile? They'll make a killing if they do.

Don't do it, Nintendo.

They patented some emulators last year. I'm thinking a cellphone with actual buttons that operates on the major networks with access to the classic Nintendo library integrated in your wireless plan. The NintendoPhone. I'd probably buy

Why? How is it going to hurt you if they put some old school SNES games or something on app stores?

I'd rather nintendo get with the times than die off. I don't really care about their mobile stuff, it seems like they are using that more for marketing than anything. It's about time they created a consolidated online account system that keeps track of purchases

IMO once they go there they won't come back. I'm looking at companies like Capcom that lose the console market then get lost in mobile games trying to make a quick buck. I think they will lose their focus there.

I would probably never play these on a mobile device, but old school nintendo on that platform would kill.

Most of them would play terribly on a touch screen. Just go 3rd party and make everyone happy.

Nintendo is going to invent physical buttons that disappear under the touch screen when not in use

This. I'm sure they'd make some money from doing it but I suspect most people would buy it for nostalgia, play it for 3 minutes with their touch screen, and then decide it plays terribly and never touch it again.

There are SOME games that could work, though, like Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, Paper Mario, and maybe some of the Warriorware games.

What if Nintendo makes the phone? What if it's not just classic titles but current shite too? What if it's as good as a Vita or 3DS but also a phone?

Nintendo could do it

Nintendo should make a fantasy sandbox MMORPG set in the Mushroom Kingdom

And then a line of gritty realistic online war FPS playgrounds with sequels every six months. Slippy could be the star.

That's what gaming is. Unless Nintendo gets with the times, frick em

This is my non-expert opinion, but Nintendo is in a constant state of damage control or catch up, but the decisions they make give off the impression that they feel it's the opposite. Making a platform a paid service when pretty much every one else does it for free would be a dumb and arrogant move.

IMO

So are you saying it's not possible for them to dip their toe into the mobile market without it affecting everything else they do?

I think you are in the minority there. If Sony and Amazon can't launch successful smart phones to compete with Apple and the various Android manufacturers, I don't have a lot of faith in Nintendo in that space.

I'd love to be proven wrong, though.

Yup.

Their next handheld might also be a phone.
