I credit Gary larsen. No blame, because I don't think it's bad. But I bet most of these guys grew up reading far side comics and influences the shows they make.

Ren and Stimpy are young pups.

There have been bizarre cartoons getting pumped out for some time.

From Disney to Dr Seuss to Fritz the Cat and on.

shite man, the Pink Elephants number in Dumbo is kind of nuts. Its just that you grew up with those so they seem normal.

There's some sort of sanity in those, even with Doctor Seuss. There's some bit of consistency. Ren and Stimpy was just fricking insane and really when cartoons went completely off the rails: Don't Wizz on the Electric Fence

I think it all started with the Cartoon Network's start in original animation. Dexter's Laboratory and Johnny Bravo were OK. Then the Power Puff girls got a little weirder. Then all hell broke loose when Nick and CN started battling in the strange cartoon department.

Ren and Stimpy predated all of that though. Those 3 weren't THAT weird. I'd say Rocko and R&S are significantly weirder than any of those mentioned: LINK

If any Cartoon Network shows were insane, it was Courage the Cowardly Dog and Cow and Chicken.

Its a little crazy how cartoons back to bugs bunny, peanuts, and probably before introduce very advanced wit and social themes considering there presumed target audience

Yet somehow as that audience "matures" we're given slapstick and dick and fart jokes

Looney Toons was pretty weird in its own right. I guess the point of cartoons has been to do things that you either can't do or people wouldn't feel comfortable doing with real life. Animation increases the feeling of fantasy and the distance with real life. Some of the stuff depicted in bugs bunny or the road runner would be downright disgusting and disturbing if a realistic interpretation were done.

Weird stuff has been around for ages, but I'd credit (or blame, depending on your take) a good deal of the recent, twisted trend to Ren & Stimpy. Those guys hit right when MTV & cable began to blow up and continued on in the biz well after the show ended. It's pretty obvious, sometimes.

I was a little kid when Ren and Stimpy had its run. I thought it was funny back then for the silliness. i watched it as an adult and was horrified. I guess so much went over my head when I was younger.

Also, for weird:

-Eek seemed normal at first but that show was trippy as frick!
