It could. It could fail massively. There's not really any signs it's working at this point.
Except that they already might have their first superstar in Embiid. I'm very high on him. I really think he could be Olajuwon good.

people said the same thing about noel last year and he's been below mediocre this year for a "superstar" prospect

Nah. No one said Noel was as good as Embiid.
Also, Embiid worries me bc he is already having foot problems within only a few years of competitive basketball. Next Yao

They might and they might not.

Thanks for being the guy to point out that the 76ers are using a risky strategy while not offering a non-risky solution.
Posted on 2/19/15 at 7:08 pm to floridatigah
saying it's "risky" is being pretty conservative with the assessment
Posted on 2/19/15 at 7:10 pm to SlowFlowPro
How is it any riskier than another strategy if the ultimate goal is to win a championship?
Posted on 2/19/15 at 7:16 pm to floridatigah
Why do NBA teams have a championship or bust mentality? What's wrong with putting an adequate product on the floor and getting your fans to buy in? The Jazz were a competitive team that was easy to root for before they blew it up. Did Toronto and Atlanta tank? No they built from mediocre to contender with a couple of good moves. OKC won a jackpot by getting 3 top 6 players with three top 5 picks, but this strategy by the Sixers is robbing the fans blind while lining the owners pockets. They are like a compulsive gambler who is trying to win it all back and more on a longshot by getting lucky in the draft.

Ok I'll be the guy to put them in the Finals based on future draft picks.

wait
what?
i was talking to this board about the doldrums like 10 years ago, fwiw. i understand the concept well
but the 76ers may be completely tarnishing their brand, for one. that's a serious risk in a league that requires FA swag
they're also not really "building" because as soon as a young player has any value, they get dealt for a pick

Wow have fun beating that straw man and speaking in hyperbole

On vacation. What a day. Add much better perimeter shooters and legit inside scoring threat. Love DJ Augustin on this team.
Only things threat scare me are Kanter's mediocre defense and the chemistry of the 2nd unit.
Also, I doubt you'll see much of Singler and Novak TBH.

I can see tarnishing their brand but I don't think it matters as much as you do. Free agents have always followed the money, and if the money is equal Philadelphia had never been a free agent destination to begging with.

If they get better value than they are trading out then they are building. Mcw doesn't look like an impact player long term and isn't that far away from getting paid, if he isn't a cornerstone of your franchise then you cash in if you can. The lakers pick is a huge chip. Mcdaniels had a complicated contract situation.
I feel like people evaluate the 76ers in dog years because they are controversial. It's only been a year and a half, it was never supposed to be a quick plan.

I hear what you are saying but the 76ers tried that for a decade and got nowhere. It works for a few, but most fail, like every other strategy.

The Bynum trade set them back anyways, so they were going to have to rebuild. They have just chosen a different past then most.
Let's allow some their draft picks to play more than 1 season before jumping to conclusions.
The one guy that has played 2 seasons is MCW and he looks like his ceiling is an average NBA PG. Those can be found pretty easily.

They have drafted Noel, MCW, mcdaniels, jerami grant with the picks we have had a chance to see. I'd say that is pretty impressive drafting, especially considering where they were picking.
People just seem mad they traded mcw in principle. I think I like him more than most and if you asked me what type of pick they could get for him it would've been late lottery at best. I think they did well in moving him.

I don't mind trading MCW but I don't know about acquiring JaVale McGee
Posted on 2/19/15 at 8:28 pm to hendersonshands
Best move of the hinkie era. Get possibly the 19th pick of the draft to take on salary they wouldn't use next year anyway, yes please. I don't know if McGee ever plays a minute unless hinkie thinks he can build his value up and get something for him.

I think that something like character actually matters for young players in the NBA. Is JaVale the guy you want to be around Nerlens and Joel all the time? Especially when people have raised concerns about Embiid's maturity.
