For those interested, a TL, DR on ISIS

Fascinating, well researched article on ISIS in the March issue of the Atlantic
LINK
Big takeaway is that they truly believe they are the agent that will bring on Armageddon. They captured some insignificant farmland in Syria and celebrated like they had taken Washington, D.C. That farmland is prophesied to be where the last battle on earth will take place.
Again, its a very long article - you need to be interested to engage, but its a fascinating read.

2. Let them attract more whackos to that location
3.
4. Profit

For a longer and more fascinating read on what's up with Isis, I present to you, the Bible.

This should be the next place we bomb.

Turn the farm into glass with a nuke. Spread ball bearings all over the place and sell tickets to the final battle/broadcast on Comedy central.

As an expert on the Western Jihadi movement I can tell you, this is a very well written and ACCURATE article.

It's the most accurate I've seen, but some things are patently wrong... take for example:
The rise of Isis has 0, zilch, nada to do with bad governance or shitty conditions or outward denigration of anywhere in the middle east.
It's rise is one thing and one thing only... in a battle of good vs evil, it is the gathering and organizing of the side of evil.
Nothing more, nothing less.
quote:
Look instead, these scholars urged, to the conditions in which these ideologies arose—the bad governance, the shifting social mores, the humiliation of living in lands valued only for their oil.
Without acknowledgment of these factors, no explanation of the rise of the Islamic State could be complete.

actually, the governance that has ruled the land is exactly why it has risen to prominence. The Koran calls for an Islamic government, governed in strict accordance to Islamic law. ISIS is doing precisely that. They are establishing a government, or a caliphate, based specifically on the archaic teachings of the Koran.
EDIT: Whether their brand of Islam is good or evil is open to interpretation. You and I probably both agree. These fools are batshit crazy, and are certainly evil, but to someone deeply embedded and involved with ISIS, it is completely logical and the purest form of their faith. They are no different than that of a crazy offshoot of Christianity, well except they lop people's heads off...

Wish I could stay all day and debate this. I'll be mostly in read-only mode since I'll be on mobile the rest of the day.

Let's pick it up tomorrow. I would love to entertain an intelligent discussion on things that really matter. It's either that, or we talk about booze, cigars, and boobs.

I respect that you may be a secular expert on Isis. But you'll be frustrated with developments until you take the Matrix view of what's going on. There is no spoon.
When Iran nukes Saudi Arabia, you heard it here first.

well written and fair. i doubt its 100% accurate but nothing ever is. the important thing is that i learned something today, and i certainly hope that those making decisions about how to manage this threat are likewise informed
