Does anyone have any recommendations on different makes and models, whats a good caliber for shooting pigs (.223 just seems too small to me, but i could be wrong).

Like any other it's about shot placement and bullet selection. Solid slug 70gr .223 will pretty much go through an average hog at range.

+1

I would shoot FMJ for the extra penetration and the cost. It will kill hogs just fine.

My cousin built a 6.8 heli hunting gun for the exact reason you mentioned. How often do you think anyone puts 5 hits on a running pig with any caliber? He has killed hundreds of hogs and he has shot 300blk and 556 and has settled on 6.8 as his pig extinguisher because when it hits, it puts them down.

It is an OB Baller round cost wise though

I personally like 300blk because of the popularity and ammo choices right now. Going with an AR-15 platform vs a ar-10 (.308 ar) platform lends many advantages for multiple calipers run off the same lower receiver as well.

Why not just a standard old mini 30 for ~$700 or M1A for $1200?

Both relatively cheap, reliable, don't break all of the time, shoot pretty well, and have awesome peep sights. Plus, they both have rails to mount scopes to if need be

Either would be the ultimate hog gun and are insanely cool to boot.

If I had a $1500 budget on a semi-auto .308, it would not be an AR. It would be on this bad boy.

What is required to slap a 7.62 upper on my AR lower? I assume new upper, bcg and how do mags work? Assume different mags?

7.62x35 (300BLK) will fit and will run the same mags since it shares the 5.56 parent case.

7.62x51 (.308 Win) will need a new lower as well since the magazine well is larger. Plus it uses a stronger buffer and buffer spring in the lower.

.50 BMG upper will work with .223 lowers.

Get one shot but it isn't like you need to worry about the vitals.
