Atlantic Coast Conference teams that play BYU now will be able to count that game toward the ACC's requirement of playing a nonleague Power 5 team, sources told ESPN.

This is a change in philosophy for the ACC. At last year's spring meetings, the ACC announced games against BYU would not count as a Power 5 opponent. Starting in 2017, ACC teams are required to play at least one nonleague Power 5 team.

The reason for the change was because three of the four remaining Power 5 leagues (Big 12, Pac-12 and Big Ten) play nine conference games or will be going to nine conference games, meaning fewer nonconference opportunities, a source said. Also, the ACC believes games against BYU -- which has gone to 10 consecutive bowl games under coach Bronco Mendenhall -- would help the league's overall strength of schedule, a source said.

Sounds like something the ACC would do.

Why do you hate Mormon Notre Dame? Or did I just answer my own question?

Appropriate, especially considering the league's arrangement with Notre Dame. BYU is probably better than several P5 teams anyway.

Navy is joining the American this year.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Army join back into a conference in the near future as well.

If you are gonna count Notre Dame I have no problem counting BYU.

ND might have been more successful in immediate history, but the disparity is not enough to make me say they are that different from BYU.

The American is not a big 5 conference.

He never said Navy was joining a P5. I read it as just clarifying Navy will not be a team that would be left us to subjective debate.

This is dumb. BYU is not on the level with the other P5 conferences. They don't play a schedule as tough as your average P5 school and Notre Dame.

The ACC should go to 9 conference games. They have enough teams.

They are 6-6 vs P5's in the past three seasons. They're exactly on the level with them, it appears.

Will the ACC follow suit?

I know LSU scheduled BYU for a few years from now.

Conferences should play as many or few conference games as they please. Everybody's happy that way.
