For those of you that workout in the morning before work, how long before you have to be at the gym do you wake up? What do you do to wakeup and have energy to workout?

I'm trying to convert to a morning workout person and I feel like I am sleep walking through the first half of my workout. Tips? Suggestions?

I usually wake up 30 minutes before I want to be at the gym, eat a banana, walk out the door and drink a pre-workout drink on the way to the gym.

Wake up at 04, turn the prepared coffee pot on, shave, then pour myself a cup of coffee by 0415. Usually watch a little TV or review my plan for the day, drink my coffee, and am in my car and at the gym down the street by the time they open at 0430.

Spend about 15 min stretching, 5 min of cardio to get my heart rate up, then workout.

Get home by 6, drink a protein shake, and sometimes go back to bed. If not, I begin my already productive day.

I'm the same way. I wish I could work out in the mornings because it would really free up some of my nights. I have the problem of hitting a wall around 2-3 in the afternoon because I'm so tired. Some of my friends who work out early tell me that you just have to power through that and you'll eventually be fine.

I'm trying to convert from a 8 am gym goer to a 5 a.m. gym goer. I've used a pre-workout the last couple of times and it seems to work.

I do the same. You'll get used to it. Maybe try drinking your pre-workout earlier. Have it ready on your nightstand or something. Turn your alarm off, drink your pre-workout, brush your teeth, get ready, grab a banana, head to the gym. The pre-workout and the caffeine in it usually takes a little bit to work into your system. Most pre-workouts say to drink them 20 to 30 minutes before a workout.

ETA: I wake up at 6:30, get to the gym around 7:00, get home by around 8:00, get ready for work and leave by 8:30 to be at work by around 9:00

I've never been able to workout in the morning. Late in the day or even at night is better for me.

I'm trying to convert to this also. Waking up at 4:30 isn't the hard part, it's getting out of bed. Maybe I should turn my fan down at night. It's just so comfortable under my sheets in a cold room.

It'll be tough at first, especially if you're unaccustomed to waking early. But once you get in the habit of morning workouts, it becomes routine. I would advise not eating before your workout. I believe it's been shown that early-morning exercise in the "fasting state" burns more fat (if you're into that sort of thing) than exercising after eating. Also, food is better absorbed post-workout.

waking up early is easy for me, 15 years of shift will do that to you.
When I go to the gym (about 0430) everyone in my house is asleep. I don't have a 3 yr old clinging to me, I don't have to worry about baseball, basketball or soccer practice. Makes me feel good that I have gotten at least one thing accomplished any given day

Wake up at 5am. Drink a pre workout. Bang my girlfriend for about an hour. Drink a protein shake/post workout. Then go about my day.

Been on that workout routine for about 2 years and I've gotten pretty yoked.

The first week or so after converting to a morning workout can be tough, but you'll get used to it. I usually wake up at 5, get to the gym at 5:30 and do 5-10 min of cardio to help get the heart rate up. I find the cardio helps a lot, I'm not big on pre-workout drinks bc I usually crash after they wear off.

Coffee or caffeine pill, a bunch of water through the day and at least 7 hours of sleep...repeat.

I do have one daughter. I take her to school on Mondays and Wednesdays, the wife on Tues, Thurs and Fridays.

On Mondays and Wednesdays I either go to the gym or go for a run and make sure I am home for about 6:15. I maker her breakfast and shower while she eats. Then, after I am dressed I help her get dressed, teeth brushed and out the door by 7 am ish
