this is a spinoff thread from a PT thread, but I just wanted to see some of the MSB types opinions on it

From a positional standpoint:

PG - today
SG - 80s/90s
SF - 80s/90s
PF - tie
C - 80s/90s

Best player vs best player:

MJ > Lebron

I'm of the opinion that top to bottom, the quality of player back then was higher than the quality of player now. Big men were considerably better. The SG position was considerably better. The only thing that today can boast of being better in are point guards, because we are currently in the most talent-rich point guard era of maybe all time.

So what do you say MSB brahs? Today or the 80s/90s?

Today for sure, and 20 years from now it will be more talented. Sports evolve. It is a little bit down for big men now, but there's such a small pool of 7 footers in the world.

no

you have an argument if you restrict this to the very top shelf talent, but top to bottom today smokes the past

I think today's SGs and SFs blow the 80s/90s out of the water.

80/90s probably wins the centers though.

The stars in the early 90's were better and would dominate today, but the league as a whole is better regarding depth.

No because the C/PF are garbage compared to any year from 1980 to 1999

The game is different, but the talent is the same. I think players today are more specialized than they were in the 90s. Meaning, there are more guys who do one thing particularly well (3P, pass, defense etc). I think the 90s had more well rounded players.

There were twenty players who averaged 20+ PPG in 1995

There are eighteen who average 20+ PPG in 2015

There were sixteen players who averaged 10+ RPG in 1995

There are twelve who average 10+ RPG in 2015

There were ten players who averaged 8+ APG in 1995
There are seven who averaged 8+ APG in 2015

More talented? Yes

However, fundamentals have taken a hit. The number of elite low post scorers and jump shooters has decreased.

It depends how you look at "Today" bc 80s/90s is a 20 year span...

PG: CP3, Kidd, Nash vs. Magic, Stockton, Thomas

SG: Kobe, Iverson, Wade, Ray Allen vs MJ, Drexler

SF: LeBron, Durant, Pierce vs. Bird, Pippen, Wilkins

PF: Duncan, Garnett, Dirk vs. Barkley, Karl Malone

C: Shaq, Howard vs. Olajuwon, Robinson, Moses Malone, Ewing, Parish

I know this is a very small sample size and I may have even missed some top guys, but to me the only position that completely runs away with it is Center. I think Shaq is the best overall, but the depth from the 80s/90s is insane.

They were better back then because they actually had fundamentals.

Yes op the NBA is the only sport which exists that the athletes somehow manage to regress instead of progress.

Easily more talented today.

Yes, easily. Not even a debate unless you're a nostalgic fool.
